Wolverhampton Wanderers will look to get out of their mini-slump when they welcome Brighton to the Molineux in the Premier League on Saturday.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have been a real revelation this season with several quality players, a clear style of play and consistency endearing them to the top-flight English neutrals. However, they are undergoing a minor blip in recent weeks.
Wolves threw away a 2-0 goal lead in the FA Cup semifinal against Watford with the Hornets scoring a late winner to progress to the final. The psychological damage could take some time to get over. However, they continue to be a formidable side at home.
In their last five games across all competitions, they have lost three games, all away from home and won 2 of the remaining, both at the Molineux against Manchester United.
Further, Wolves need to get out of the rut and start picking up points soon with a potential Europa League spot available for finishing seventh in the PL table. This will happen if Manchester City win the FA Cup final against Watford, a highly likely event.
Currently, Wolves have 47 points from 33 games and sit in 8th place, level on points with 7th-placed Leicester and have a game in hand. Watford have played the same number of games as them and are a point behind while Everton are also a point behind but have played a game more.
Thus, Nuno’s side have something important to play for, and their home form could be vital to achieving that objective.
Coming to their opponents, a few bad results have dragged Brighton into the relegation battle. The Seagulls have now lost their last five games across all competitions, including a crucial one against Cardiff this week. The latter are in 18th place, and the win puts them just two points away from Brighton in 17th place, although the Bluebirds have played a game more.
Thus, Chris Hughton’s side will look to get back to winning ways or risk getting relegated quickly. The Seagulls have failed to score in each of their last five games and will have to find the back of the net against Wolves if they have to get a result.
Injuries and Suspensions
In terms of injuries, Wolves are the most fortunate side in the league this season, and Nuno once again has a fully-fit squad to choose from.
It is almost a similar case for Brighton with only Anthony Knockaert out due to suspension and Jason Steele missing out due to a long-term wrist injury.
While Wolves are in better form and are a much more superior team at home, Brighton will take confidence from their head-to-head record. The Seagulls have lost just three games against their opponents in their history, including clean sheets in their last three meetings.
However, Brighton have failed to win 26 of their last 29 PL away games and conceded a minimum of two goals in 6 of their last seven away games in the league.
Thus, Wolves are favorites to win the match and could continue Brighton’s goalless streak for another game.
