Looking to claim his ninth Wimbledon title, Roger Federer will face Lloyd Harris in the first round on Tuesday.
Federer has won eight singles titles at Wimbledon, which is already a record. He has reached 11 finals there and is the only man other than Rafael Nadal to reach the final of a single Grand Slam 11 times. Despite his greatness, age has caught up with Federer as well. Since 2013, he has lifted the trophy at Wimbledon just once. He lost in the quarter-final last year to Kevin Anderson. Federer took the first two sets in that game, but Anderson staged a comeback to knock him out.
The next two Grand Slams were not kind to Federer. He went out in the fourth round at the US Open and the Australian Open. However, he improved at the French Open in May. Federer reached the semi-final at Roland Garros where Rafael Nadal defeated him. Despite the exit, he showed encouraging signs in Paris. He beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the final to claim his tenth title in Halle. Speaking of decades, this will be Federer’s 20th appearance at Wimbledon in his career. He entered as a teenager with a man bun in 1999 and now is arguably the best player ever to grace the grass courts of SW19. His last Wimbledon title came in 2017, but he will be keen to further add to that tally.
Lloyd Harris will be Federer’s opponent in the first round. This year will be the first time Harris has managed to enter the main draw at Wimbledon. He played the qualifiers last time but failed to overcome them. He made his Grand Slam main draw debut at the US Open last year. Since then, he has made the main draw at each major. The South African is ranked 87th in the world right now, which is a personal best. Harris has won three Challenger titles in his career so far, but no ATP titles. He is still just 22, which means that there is a lot of scope for improvement.
Before the draw, Harris had said: “I am feeling excited ahead of my first Wimbledon main draw and appearance and feel like I have had good preparations on grass despite having lost two of my previous matches leading up to the tournament.” Boy, he got a tough draw. Not many players are as imposing as Roger Federer on the Wimbledon courts.
Roger Federer vs Lloyd Harris Prediction
Federer is a huge favorite to reach the second round by winning against Harris. The second seed should win in straight sets with relative ease. The match will be one-sided, and Federer should start his campaign on a winning note.
