West Ham vs Southampton Preview
West Ham United will play their last home game of the season when they host Southampton at the London Stadium on Saturday.
The Hammers played Spurs in a London derby last week, and it was a favorable game for them. Mauricio Pellegrini’s side won 1-0, as Michail Antonio got the solitary goal. Not many expected that result, but West Ham put in an impressive performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The season started with promise for West Ham, but it has not materialized into points. They are 11th in the Premier League table, and it is likely that they will finish in the bottom half. Pellegrini had a strong squad to work with, and the result has not been optimal. Injuries have had their say as well, and so has some inconsistency. This Hammers side is capable of performances like that against Spurs, but those have been rare.
West Ham have lost three out of their last five league games, with no clean sheets in four of those games. Marko Arnautovic is back into the lineup, and he will start with Michail Antonio and Felipe Anderson on the flanks. West Ham’s attack has been changed and chopped many times, which has resulted in a sub-par output.
Southampton are on a high, as they secured their Premier League survival last week. A 3-3 draw with Bournemouth was enough for the Saints, and they are now 7 points clear of Cardiff with two games to go. The relegation battle is still on, as both Cardiff and Brighton will look to avoid that last spot.Embed from Getty Images
Ralph Hasenhuttl has reinvigorated this team since coming into the club. The Saints are now on 38 points, and they could win their 10th game of the season on Saturday. Their attack has improved under Hasenhuttl. The Saints have scored in each of their last nine games.
Hasenhuttl has deployed a 3-4-3 system, and the group of players are suited to it. Even though they have won just one out of the last five games, their performances have been good. They conceded late equalizers against Bournemouth and Watford to drop point in both games.
Pellegrini has a couple of injuries to deal with. Manuel Lanzini is out with a groin problem, and the attacker could make a return. Aaron Cresswell is also a doubt, as the left-back has a knee injury to deal with. Jan Valery made his return against Bournemouth, which pushed James Ward-Prowse back into the midfield role. Meanwhile, center-back Maya Yoshida is a doubt as he is nursing an illness.
