UEFA Nations League: Portugal vs Switzerland Prediction and Preview

The UEFA Nations League will return when Portugal take on Switzerland in the first semi-final at the Estadio do Dragao in Porto.

Portugal were in Group 3, which contained Italy and Poland aside from them. They went unbeaten throughout the group stage, winning two and drawing two games. Andre Silva scored the only goal as Portugal began their campaign with a 1-0 win over Italy. He scored yet again as Portugal recorded a 3-2 win over Poland in their second game. Bernardo Silva also scored in that game, as Cristiano Ronaldo was taking a rest from proceedings.

Italy managed to hold on for a point in the reverse fixture, as the ended 0-0. In the last group stage game, Portugal drew 1-1 with Poland. Andre Silva scored yet again in that game, and he kept the goals ticking despite Ronaldo’s absence. Ronaldo did return to the side as the qualification games for Euro 2020 began. Portugal played Ukraine and Serbia in their first two qualifiers, drawing both of them. Ronaldo started both the games, captaining the side in the process.

He will be the main man yet again, as Portugal will aim to reach the Nations League final. Ronaldo has scored 85 goals for his country so far, which is the most by any player. He moved ahead of Ferenc Puskas to become the leading international scorer for a European nation. Aside from Ronaldo, Fernando Santos has other stars at his disposal. Namesakes Bernardo and Andre are the significant names in the attack. Bernardo is coming off another successful season with Manchester City, and Andre has impressed at Sevilla.

Switzerland were in Group 2, along with Belgium and Iceland. They finished on nine points, which was the same as Belgium. But a superior goal difference sent them through. They started their campaign with a 6-0 thrashing of Iceland. The likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and Admir Mehmedi scored, as six different players got their goals. The ties against Belgium were going to be vital, and they lost the first one. Belgium won 2-1 courtesy of a brace from Romelu Lukaku.

Iceland were defeated again in their third match, this time by a 2-1 scoreline. Switzerland faced Belgium in their final game, needing a big win to progress. They did exactly that, beating the Red Devils 5-2. Haris Seferovic scored a hat-trick in the game to hand Switzerland a path to the semi-final. Seferovic will be the man leading the attack when they will take on Portugal.

Portugal vs Switzerland Prediction

The game will be a close one, as Santos likes to keep Portugal’s defense compact and organised. He also has the best player in the tie by his side in the form of Ronaldo. Despite Switzerland’s form in the group stage, the home side will be favorites for this one. Goals will be few and expect less than 2.5 in total. The home side should get the win to progress to the UEFA Nations League final.
