The Netherlands will host England in the UEFA Nations League semi-final at the Estadio D. Afonso Henriques.
Both the sides impressed in the group stage, but the Netherlands arguably had a tougher job. Their group contained France and Germany, both of whom were tough obstacles. Despite this, Holland topped Group 1 to reach the semi-finals. Their campaign started on a sad note, as France defeated them 2-1 in their opening game. Ryan Babel scored for Holland, but it was not enough as the world champions got the three points.
But the Oranje bounced back, defeating Germany 3-0 in their second game. Virgil van Dijk, Memphis Depay, and Giorginio Wijlandum got the goals for them in that game. Then they beat France 2-0, and Wijnaldum and Depay got on the score-sheet yet again. They played Germany in the last game, where a draw would have sufficed. Germany led 2-0 inside 20 minutes, and it was looking tight. But Quincy Promes and van Dijk scored two late goals to send Holland through to the semi-final. Since the Nations League, Holland’s good run has continued. Their qualification campaign for Euro 2020 has got off to the perfect start. They won 4-0 against Belarus in the opening game and narrowly lost to Germany in their second game. Memphis Depay will be the key player for them, as he has scored four goals in his last four games. Their defense is brilliant as well due to the partnership between van Dijk and Matthijs de Ligt.
They will come up against another young side in England. Since their run to the World Cup semi-finals in Russia, England have continued to impress. They were in Group 4 with Spain and Croatia. England were winless in their first two group games. Spain beat them 2-1 in the first game, and a goalless draw with Croatia followed that. But England bounced back to record a memorable 3-2 win over Spain in Seville. Raheem Sterling netted a brace as England raced into a 3-0 lead in that one. England faced Croatia at Wembley in their last game, and they needed a win to qualify. Despite falling behind the Three Lions came back to record a 2-1 win. Harry Kane scored a late winner to send the home crowd into raptures. England’s Euro 2020 qualifiers have started with a bang as well. In their first two games, they have beat Montenegro and the Czech Republic by a combined score of 10-1.
