Tottenham Hotspur will play their third game at the new stadium when they take on relegated Huddersfield on Saturday in the Premier League. This match is sandwiched in between the two legs of their Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City, the first of which they won 1-0 on Tuesday.
Son Heung-min scored the solitary goal as Mauricio Pochettino’s side won the first leg. City were the favorites going into the tie, but Spurs negated them well and pulled out an impressive win. They will carry a slender advantage to Manchester next week, but it’s an advantage nonetheless. The major negative from the game was Harry Kane’s injury, but more on that later.
Spurs are fourth in the Premier League, and that spot is far from certain. Arsenal and Manchester United are closing on them, and the league carries importance for Pochettino as well. Tottenham have lost three out of their last five league games, which has cost them their healthy lead over fellow top-four contenders.
Huddersfield’s season has nothing left in it in contrast, as their relegation was confirmed two weeks ago. A 2-0 loss at Crystal Palace confirmed the departure to the Championship after a two-year stay in the Premier League. The Terriers are last in the table, and they have won just three league games all season.
Manager David Wagner was fired earlier this year, and caretaker Jan Siewert has taken over. He has failed to improve the side, and the results have been poor. Huddersfield pulled off a miracle when they avoided relegation last season, but apparently, thunder doesn’t strike twice.
Harry Kane limped off with an ankle problem in the win over City, and that was a big blow to his side. Spurs have not confirmed the injury status, but he is likely to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Son will deputise for him in his absence, and Lucas Moura should start the majority of the games over Fernando Llorente.
Dele Alli is also a doubt for Spurs, as he suffered an arm injury in the game against City. The likes of Serge Aurier, Erik Lamela, and Eric Dier are also absent, which means that Pochettino will have a thin squad at his disposal. He will face City in the second leg in quick succession, which makes managing his team properly the priority.
Siewert has fewer injury concerns, as Adama Diakhaby and Demeaco Duhaney are the only significant doubts for the game. Spurs are the huge favorites going into the tie, as Huddersfield have nothing left to play for. Pochettino will hope for a professional performance which will give him the chance to rest the likes of Son and Eriksen for the second leg.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Huddersfield Prediction
Spurs should win comfortably, and Huddersfield will find it hard to score. Huge Lloris should keep another clean sheet, and Llorente and Moura could get a rare league start. The home side should get the three points to keep themselves in the top four race.
