Promoted Aston Villa will travel to London to play their first Premier League of the season against Tottenham Hotspur.
Mauricio Pochettino will begin his sixth season at the club. The five before have not yielded any trophies but last season Spurs came very close. They reached the Champions League final where Liverpool beat them 2-0 to clinch European glory. It was the second final in Pochettino’s Spurs career. The first one was a loss to Chelsea in the 2015 League Cup final.
Despite no success in terms of trophies, Spurs have managed to keep the core of their squad intact. The likes of Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, and Dele Alli are still key players at the club. Eriksen reportedly wanted to leave Tottenham this summer, but any move has failed to materialise. He looks set to start the season in north London yet again.
After signing zero players last summer, Spurs went big in this transfer window. They signed Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele for £55 million. The Frenchman is a talented player who can do a little bit of everything in the middle of the park. He will hope to help Spurs better their fourth-placed finish from last year. Manchester City and Liverpool look to contend for the title yet again, but Spurs have the potential to be a dark horse contender. They have the continuity and the squad compared to the other teams around them. If either one of Liverpool or City slips up, Spurs will be ready to capitalise.
As for Aston Villa, staying safe will be the priority. After falling short last time, they are in the top flight again. Villa faced Fulham in the playoff final in 2018, but the London side won on the day. Dean Smith came back strong, and Villa beat Derby County in the final this time to progress. It has been a tough road for them the last two seasons, but the gift of Premier League football will be sweet.
They have made their mark in the transfer window as well. Villa’s spending this summer has crossed £100 million already. Those signings have been headlined by Wesley, who was signed from Club Brugge. The striker had 13 goals and 7 assists in the Belgian Pro League last season. Aside from Wesley Villa has signed a host of other players. Tyrone Mings was signed from Bournemouth for a hefty fee as well.
The likes of Douglas Luiz and Matt Targett have been signed as well. Villa’s last season in the Premier League was in the 2015-16 campaign. Manager Remi Garde failed to keep them safe, and their 29-year-long stay in the top flight came to an end.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa Prediction
Tottenham will go into the game as overwhelming favorites. They should get their Premier League campaign to a winning start. The total goals in the game should be more than 2.5 and Villa will find it tough to score themselves. Villa will play defensively, but Spurs have the quality to unlock their defense and claim the win.
