Sassuolo will travel to the Olimpico di Torino to face Torino in their first Serie A match of the season.
Sassuolo finished 11th in the Serie A last season. That is the area of the table where they have found themselves in recent years. The one exception came in the 2015-16 season when they finished 6th in the league. They have not been able to replicate that success since. Sassuolo’s preparations for this season have gone quite well. They have won the majority of their preseason games.
Their season started when they faced Spezia in the third round of the Coppa Italia. Hamed Junior Traore scored the solitary goal as Sassuolo claimed a 1-0 win. That game was the first competitive game for Sassuolo this season. Manager Roberto De Zerbi is into his second season at the club and he will want to improve. Finishing in the top half will be on his mind for sure, and the European places look a bit out of reach now.
Sassuolo spent a good chunk of money in the transfer window. Manuel Locatelli was signed from AC Milan for €10 million. Pedro Obiang and Francesco Caputo were the other noteworthy signings they have made ahead of the new season. They lost Matteo Politano to Inter Milan on a permanent basis which was a big loss. Veteran striker Kevin-Prince Boateng also moved as he joined Fiorentina for a nominal fee.
As for Torino, they have bigger ambitions than Sassuolo this season. They finished 7th last season, which granted them a ticket to the Europa League. Torino got an entry to the second qualifying round where they faced Hungarian side Debrecen. It was an easy draw for the Italian side and they won 7-1 across the two legs. Both Simone Zaza and Andrea Belotti scored twice against Debrecen.
In the third qualifying round they were drawn against FC Shakhtyor. The Belarusian side were no match for Torino who won the first leg 5-0 to put the result of the tie beyond doubt. Belotti scored twice in this fixture as well. They faced Wolves from the Premier League in the next round which is a much tougher opponent. Wolves won 3-2 in the first leg and the second leg will be played in England next week. Torino face a tough task to fight back from the deficit to progress in the competition.
Going by the head to head record between Torino and Sassuolo, the former have a great advantage. They have been unbeaten in the last six meetings between the two sides. The last game they played ended in a 3-2 win for Torino in the Serie A.
Torino vs Sassuolo Betting Tips
A similar result is on the cards on Sunday and Torino are favorites to clinch the three points. Both sides should score, and the total goals should be over 2.5 in the game. But the likes of Zaza and Belotti are in great form and they should power Torino to the three points.
