Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Thomas Fabbiano Preview and Prediction

Greek youngster Stefanos Tsitsipas will play Thomas Fabbiano in the first round of Wimbledon on Monday.

Tsitsipas has had another great year so far in which he has improved vastly. The Greek has a 34-14 record this year, which is impressive at his age and experience. He reached his first Grand Slam semi-final in January in the Australian Open. Tsitsipas upset Roger Federer in the fourth round in Melbourne in a game which was one of the biggest of his career. Rafael Nadal beat Tsitsipas in the semi-final, but it was a great tournament for him nonetheless. In the French Open, he lost to Stan Wawrinka in the fourth round in a tightly contested game that went the distance.

The clay season was good for him, as he reached the final at the Madrid Open and the semi-final at the Italian Open. As the season shifts to grass, he will hope to continue that form here as well. Tsitsipas has played just twice at Wimbledon before. In 2017, he went out in the first round against Dusan Lajovic. Last year, he went as far as the fourth round. John Isner got the better of him in straight sets to knock him out.

Tsitsipas is currently ranked sixth in the world according to the ATP rankings. He has won three ATP titles in his career so far, but neither has come on grass. The latest one came in May when he won the Estoril Open on clay. Since the French Open, he has played in two tournaments. He lost in the round of 16 at the Libema Open. He made the quarter-final of Queens where he lost to fellow youngster Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Unseeded Thomas Fabbiano will be the opponent in the first round for Tsitsipas. This year is the third consecutive one in which Fabbiano has made the main draw at Wimbledon. In the three years before that, he failed to cross the qualifying hurdle. Last year saw his best finish when he reached the third round. Coincidentally, Tsitsipas was the player who knocked him out in 2018.

Tsitsipas won that clash 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 with relative ease. In the previous round, Fabbiano had defeated Stan Wawrinka in straight sets which were a huge upset. Fabbiano played in the Australian Open and French Open this year but failed to cross the third round in either event.

He reached the final at Eastbourne International this week where he lost to Sam Querrey. That run on grass must have given him high confidence ahead of Wimbledon. These two players have met just once in their careers, which was the third round match last time here.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Thomas Fabbiano Prediction

Tsitsipas will be the favorite to produce a similar result this time as well. His form on grass has not been great, but he should have enough to get the opening win. Tsitsipas should get the win in straight sets at the expense of Thomas Fabbiano.
