In the most surprising of results, world champions England were thumped by South Africa in the 1st ODI of at Cape Town by 7 wickets. South Africa, who had lost the Test series against England 3-1 and are going through a transition, were expected to struggle against the ODI world champs despite playing at home.
However, they put up a professional display led by Quinton de Kock and now lead the 3-match series 1-0. The series is now nicely set up and the second ODI on February 7 promises to be a riveting contest.
South Africa Match Form
The Proteas finally put up a team performance and were good with both the bat and the ball. The bowlers restricted England to a modest 258. Tabraiz Shamsi was the pick of the lot with 3-38. The others like JJ Smuts, Lungi Ngidi and Beuran Hendricks utilized the juice in the pitch quite well. It will be interesting to see how England responds to them in the 2nd match.
South Africa’s batting was led by skipper Quinton de Kock’s magnificent 107 and the returning Temba Bavuma’s solid 98. The two are expected to be the batting mainstays for South Africa in the series. However, the likes of Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen might be the ones making the impact in the 2nd ODI. David Miller too will be watched out for lower down the order.
England Match Form
England has plenty of talent in the ranks but most of them couldn’t perform in the first match. With the likes of Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root at the top, followed by captain Eoin Morgan and Joe Denly (who was the top-scorer in the last game with 87), England have enough firepower.
In their bowling, England has Chris Woakes and Sam Curran as their lead bowlers. However, Tom Curran, Matthew Parkinson and Joe Denly would have do much better. Chris Jordan, with his ability to bowl at the death, might have an important part in the next game.
