He looked pale, slightly disinterested but mostly just going through the motions. Shubhman Gill is a bright upcoming talent. We all know that. The sad part is, he knows that as well. And that’s why in the last game that KKR played he didn’t look entirely happy with the proceedings.
He’s a good batsman, an amazing prospect and for sure someone who the Indian team management thinks highly of as he has played a couple of ODIs as well for the country. But one thing that Shubhman Gill has not been able to do is to impress on the big stage.
He had a bite at the cherry in a couple of ODIs against New Zealand and he wasn’t able to do much but what would really rankle is the lack of exposure that he’s getting at KKR. It just seems that the team has forgotten he even exists in the team as he’s pushed way down the batting order giving him no chance to even bat for a decent amount of time.
And all this is happening while his colleagues from the junior ranks are tonking it out of the park and getting that much-needed exposure at the top. Eventually, it is a case of gross mismanagement from the side of KKR because in the previous game they actually had the option to play Shubhman Gill at the top of the order with Chris Lynn which should have given Gill enough time to express himself.
The reason they went with Naik, a player who ate up 15 odd balls for a single digit score and wasted a review for an LBW decision that looked as plumb as any decision could is debatable.
It’s no secret that KKR is struggling massively when it comes to their opening combination and they’ve had escapes from some really tough circumstances through some ridiculously brilliant batting by Russell but it goes beyond understanding why a captain like Dinesh Karthik who would back a newcomer in Prasidh Krishna to bowl the super over not do the same with Gill and give him a chance to really express himself at the top.
The role that Shubhman Gill is playing right now in the eleven (which is not entirely clear) is not fulfilling his potential entirely and the team could do much more with him than just have him languishing somewhere in that lower order.
If the expression from Shubhman Gill during the match against Delhi was any indication then he’s really hungry to make a mark on the biggest stage. What remains to be seen is whether KKR takes this opportunity to create a star or let this opportunity pass them by.
