Houston Dynamo will look to get back to winning ways when they visit the Avaya Stadium to face the San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS on Wednesday.
In the last two games they played, Houston were beaten heavily. The first of those games was in the US Open Cup. They faced Minnesota United on their home stadium. Ronaldo Pena and Tomas Martinez scored to put Houston 2-0 up in the first half. It looked as though they would progress to the round of 16, but Minnesota had other ideas. They scored thrice in the second half to inflict a 3-2 defeat upon Houston.
Then Houston faced Portland in their next game in the MLS. Portland won 4-0 and thoroughly dominated Houston in the process. Houston had just one shot on target in the match compared to ten from Portland. Houston have won only one game from the last five in all competitions. That victory came in the US Open Cup fourth round against Austin. In the last six MLS games, Houston have won just one.
Houston are fifth in the Western Conference, but they have played fewer games than the teams around them. They have played 14 games this season, while most teams around them have played 16. This gives them an advantage, and if they can win those games in hand, they could go as high as third. Houston’s playoff status is still not secure, and they will need some wins to be sure of that. Top scorer Mauro Manotas will be crucial in getting those wins. He should return to the lineup against San Jose.
San Jose are eighth in the table, five points below Houston despite having played a game more. They are just a point off the playoffs. Real Salt Lake in seventh are just a point above San Jose. RSL have played a game more, so San Jose can haul themselves into the playoff spots if they win their game in hand.
They faced LAFC in their last game in the US Open Cup. LAFC won the game 3-1 to knock San Jose out of the competition. San Jose had claimed a thrilling 4-3 win over the Sacramento Republic in the last round. San Jose are unbeaten in their previous four league games, and they have won four out of their last six MLS games.
Chris Wondolowski has been their top scorer this season with eight goals in the MLS. He is in stunning form for the Earthquakes. Wondolowski has scored those eight goals in his last four league games. He bagged four goals in a recent 4-1 win over Chicago.
San Jose Earthquakes vs Houston Dynamo Prediction
Despite the disparity in league positions, this will be a tough game. San Jose are in great form, and they should cause Houston problems. The total goals are expected be more than 2.5 in this game. Wondolowski is likely to continue his scoring run for San Jose.
