Champions Juventus will round off their Serie A campaign when they travel to the Marassi to face Sampdoria on Sunday.
Buoyed by the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, Juventus have powered their way to the title. The title seemed like a formality by December when they had accumulated a massive lead with half a season gone. Juve mathematically won it when they beat Fiorentina in April. Since then, their form has dropped off a cliff. In the four games they have played, Juve have not won a single one of them.
They have drawn three and lost to Roma two weeks ago. Last week they played Atalanta and managed to claim a point by a 1-1 draw. Juve’s main goal this season was the Champions League, and hopes were high after the beat Atletico Madrid in the round of 16. But a youthful Ajax side beat them in the quarter-finals to progress. That was a disappointing result, and they will go at it again next season.
But they will have to do it without their manager. Massimiliano Allegri will step down after Sunday after five seasons in Turin. Juve have not announced his replacement yet, and the search is underway. Allegri won five Serie A titles in that time along with other cup competitions. Sampdoria will be his last game, and the Juventus players will be motivated to give their manager the perfect sendoff.
They will come up against a Sampdoria side whose season is all but over as well. Sampdoria are in 9th place, and it is certain that they will finish there. Lazio in 8th place are 9 points ahead, and Sassuolo in 10th place are 7 points below. Sampdoria’s recent form has been woeful. They have failed to win any of their last five Serie A matches.
In that run of five games, they have picked up just two points. They lost games against Bologna, Lazio, and Empoli. Last week they played Chievo, and the game ended in a goalless draw. Chievo received a red card in the first half, and Sampdoria dominated most of the game. But they failed to score and the game ended in a dull draw.
Sampdoria have the league’s top scorer in their ranks. Fabio Quagliarella has scored 26 Serie A goals this season, which is four more than any other player. He is aged 36, but that has not defied him in an incredible individual season. He will have the chance to increase that tally in their final home game.
Sampdoria vs Juventus Prediction
Juventus will be favorites in this one despite their shaky form. Goals will be plenty, and there should be more than 2.5 in total in the game. Juventus have won four of the last five meetings between the two sides, and they should claim another win here. Both teams should score as well, and the game will be an entertaining one for the neutral.
