Swiss great Roger Federer will continue his French Open journey when he faces Oscar Otte in the second round on Wednesday.
After a four-year absence from Paris, Federer is back. He last played at Roland-Garros in the quarter-finals, when he bowed out in the quarter-finals. As age and injuries took the toll on him, he opted to sit out of the French Open since then. That approach worked out for him, as he added to his kitty of Grand Slam titles. But he is back in Paris, and his first-round match was little more than a formality.
Federer faced Frenchman Lorenzo Sonego in the first round. The Swiss won in straight sets, with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 scoreline. He cruised to victory in less than 2 hours and barely broke a sweat. Federer had 74 winners in the game, and he dominated Sonego in the clash. More robust tests await him in the future rounds, but he has got off to the perfect start in Paris.
Federer has won the French Open just once, in 2009. Rafael Nadal is the major obstacle why he has not lifted the trophy on more occasions. Nadal will be the favorite yet again this time. The win against Sonego was his 60th consecutive win in the first round at a Grand Slam. “I missed it so much so thanks for the welcome,” said Federer after the game. “I felt great playing on this court. It looks great and attractive, so congratulations to everyone involved. Hopefully, I can play here again for my next match.”
He will come up against German international Oscar Otte. Despite losing in the qualifiers, Otte finds himself in the second round of the French Open. He came up against Malek Jaziri from Tunisia in the first round. Otte took the first two sets, but Jaziri bounced back to take the third. Otte took the fourth set 6-0 to record a 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 win over the Tunisian.
Otte has just once Grand Slam appearance before this year when he reached the French Open first round in 2018. Aside from that, he has failed to reach the main round of any other Grand Slam. He will come up against Federer, who is his idol. He will be a huge underdog in the game. Before his first-round win, Otte had won just one match on tour in the last eight years. He had mostly plied his trade in the Futures and Challenger tournaments.
Roger Federer vs Oscar Otte Prediction
Federer will be a huge favorite to win this match, and he should record a win just like he did in the first round. A win in straight sets is highly likely for the Swiss legend. Otte has negligible experience at this level, and that will be reflected in the game. The veteran Federer should get an easy win to progress to the third round of the French Open.
