Rennes can put the final nail in the Guingamp coffin when they face off at Roazhon Park on Sunday in the Ligue 1.
Rennes are safe from relegation, and they are currently 13th in the league. They have a healthy cushion of 15 points over the relegation zone. They could still finish in the top half, and that will be the primary objective for coach Julian Stephan. But their peak of the season came two weeks ago. Rennes faced Paris Saint-Germain in the French Cup final. PSG were leading 2-0 after 21 minutes, and Rennes looked to be out.
But they came back magnificently and made it 2-2 in regulation. Then they went on to prevail in the penalty shootout by a 6-5 margin to clinch the trophy. It was an incredible final, and that memory will still be ripe in the minds of the players. Despite that glory, their league form has been far from impressive. Rennes are winless in their last eight Ligue 1 games. Their last league win came in early March when they beat Caen 3-1.
Rennes qualified for the Europa League last season, and Arsenal knocked them out of the competition. Finishing in the bottom half will be a step-down, but the Coupe de France has been a highlight. This game will be second last home game of the season for Rennes. Lille will visit on the final day, and that will not be an easy match. Guingamp looks to be the best chance to get provide the fans one last hurrah.
Guingamp are in great danger, as they are rooted to the bottom of the table. Relegation is highly likely for them, but all is not lost. With three games to go, they are currently on 25 points. Caen are in the relegation playoff spot, and they are five points above Guingamp. Catching Caen is something Guingamp would have on their mind. Achieving direct safety would need wins from all three games remaining, and that could be a bit of a stretch.
Their recent form does not show much promise. Guingamp are winless in their last six league games. Three of them have been defeats, and by a combined scoreline of 8-1. In the previous three league games, Guingamp have scored just once. They have the worst attack in the league this season. No other side has scored less than Guingamp’s 24 league goals this campaign. Their defense is the worst as well. They have conceded 63 times, and no other side has even crossed 55.
Rennes vs Guingamp Prediction
Neither side is in great form, and the game is a tough one to call. Rennes will be the favorites just because of the better quality in their ranks. The total goals should be more than 2.5 in this game, and Rennes should exploit Guingamp’s leaky defense. Guingamp need a win to keep their survival chances alive, but it’s hard to see them get one on Sunday.
