Anfield will host the first Premier League game of the season when Liverpool entertain promoted side Norwich City.
European champions Liverpool will aim to go at the Premier League again this time. They were in the title race till the very end last season, but Manchester City pipped them to the prize. City won the Premier League title by a slender margin of one point. But their victory should not take anything away from Liverpool’s effort. The Reds accumulated 97 points, which is their best ever total in the Premier League era. In fact, it is the third highest in the history of the competition.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will be one of the favorites again this time. They won the Champions League in June which ended last season on a high. Now Klopp will look to claim Liverpool’s first ever Premier League title. Last season was a tough pill to swallow, especially with the points they accumulated. They will have the same core of players to go again this season.
Liverpool have not made any major signings yet. Their squad is already deep, but they may need some players in attacking positions. The trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane are good to go but the backup is not enticing. Salah and Mane both scored 22 league goals last season and shared the Golden Boot award. Liverpool’s defense was also exemplary, as they conceded just 22 league goals in 38 games.
They will face promoted side Norwich City in the opening game. Norwich won the Championship last season and gained direct promotion to the Premier League. The Canaries were five points clear of second-placed Sheffield United in the end. They lost just six games all season and scored a whopping 93 goals in 46 games in the Championship.
Norwich’s last extended stay in the Premier League lasted for three seasons. Paul Lambert led them to the top flight in 2011. Norwich finished 12th in the first season, but Paul Lambert left them after that for Aston Villa. Chris Hughton joined the following season, and Norwich finished 11th that season. The 2013/14 campaign was a bad one for Norwich in the Premier League, and they finished 18th to earn a ticket back to the Championship.
Norwich made a return in the 2015/16 season, but they went back to the Championship immediately. In that season they played out a memorable encounter against Liverpool which ended in a 5-4 loss. Since 2011, the two teams have met eight times in the Premier League. Liverpool have not lost even once, and they have won six of those eight matches.
Liverpool vs Norwich City Prediction
Playing at Anfield, Liverpool will be the overwhelming favorites this time as well. They should get the three points on the opening night. A clean sheet is also likely for Liverpool and Norwich will find it tough to score. The total goals should be greater than 2.5 in the game, and the Reds should claim a comfortable victory.
