Porto will host Liverpool as they attempt to overturn a 2-0 deficit from their first leg of the Champions League quarter-final.
Liverpool are in pole position to progress to the semi-finals for the second consecutive season. Goals from Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino handed them the win last week, and they could have killed the tie then itself. But they spurred some chances, which means they can’t take the second leg lightly.
These two sides met in the Round of 16 last season when Liverpool won the first leg 5-0. However this time, Porto have a chance of overturning the deficit. Liverpool are in a tight Premier League title race, and they lead Manchester City by two points at the top. They have played a game more, but the belief is as strong as ever at Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Chelsea 2-0 at the weekend, as Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah scored the goals. The win was a huge one in the title picture, and the pressure is back on City. The focus is on the Champions League for now, as they hope to emulate what they did last season. Liverpool went all the way to the final, only to lose to Real Madrid in the showpiece event.
Porto have a tough task on their hands, as they look to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2004. However, Porto have impressed this season in the competition. They have lost just twice, including last week’s defeat at Anfield. Surprisingly, they are the only side to win all of their home games this season in the Champions League.
The Portuguese side is involved in a title race of their own. They are in second place in the Primeira Liga, and trail toppers Benfica on just goal difference. Porto won 3-0 Portimonense on Saturday, as striker Moussa Marega netted yet again.
Sergio Conceicao’s side came back from a deficit in the Round of 16. Trailing 2-1 to Roma, they won 3-1 at the Estadio do Dragao to complete the comeback. Liverpool is a stricter test, but the home fans will be hoping to see a similar performance on Wednesday.
Injuries and Suspensions
Jordan Henderson is a doubt for Liverpool after the captain suffered an ankle problem in the win over Chelsea. He has impressed lately in an advanced role, and Georginio Wijnaldum will fill in if needed. Andrew Robertson will come back to the lineup, as he was suspended for the first leg. Either of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip should start alongside Virgil van Dijk in defense. Meanwhile, Porto will welcome Hector Herrera and Pepe from suspension which is a boost.
Liverpool will be happy to sit back if needed, and they are a potent force on the counter-attack. If they score once, Porto will need to score 4, which is highly unlikely. Both sides should score in this one, but overturning the deficit is too much of an ask from Porto. Liverpool should progress to the semi-finals for the second consecutive season.
