Novak Djokovic vs Ugo Humbert Preview and Prediction – Wimbledon 2019

World number one Novak Djokovic will face French youngster Ugo Humbert in his Wimbledon round of 16 match.

Djokovic has rolled through with ease in his first three matches at the Championships so far. He faced Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first round and beat him 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. Then he met American Denis Kudla in the third round. Another straightforward victory followed for the Serb. Djokovic beat Kudla 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. He faced Hubert Hurkacz in the third round, and that one was his toughest match yet.

The first two sets were closely fought in that encounter, and both players took one. But Djokovic took the next two sets quickly to win 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-4. That match saw the only dropped set from the Serb in the tournament so far. Djokovic is aiming to win the second Grand Slam of the year after clinching the Australian Open title in January. He bowed out in the French Open semi-final against Dominic Thiem.

The draw has been a favorable one thus far for Djokovic. Humbert will be the fourth unseeded player in succession who will play the top seed. His side of the draw looks relatively easy, which should, in theory, give him an easy path to the final. Last year’s winner will be focused on repeating his success, and Humbert will face a very tough match-up.

In reality, not many expected Humbert to reach this far. He faced Gael Monfils in the first round. Monfils was the favourite on paper, and he took the first two sets. But Humbert bounced back strongly. He took the next two and was leading 3-0 in the second before Monfils retired. Despite not getting the win outright, the performance was an encouraging one for Humbert.

He faced Marcel Granollers of Spain in the second round. Humbert won in straight sets to defeat the Spaniard. In the third round, he faced fellow youngster Felix Auger-Aliassime. Many expected the Canadian to win, but Humbert had other ideas. He won 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 with relative ease. This is the first time the 21-year-old has taken part in Wimbledon, and he has impressed. He has failed to cross the second round at any other Grand Slam, but that barrier has been breached here.

“I had a good attitude, I was good in the key moments,” he said after beating Auger-Aliassime. “It was just happiness and pleasure. There was no pressure, that was a good feeling. Against Novak Djokovic, I expect a great match with a lot of intensity. I need to have the same feelings on the court and play to win. I want to play my game and let’s see what happens.”

Novak Djokovic vs Ugo Humbert Prediction

Humbert is upbeat, but Djokovic will be the huge favorite to pick up the win. The Serb should win in straight sets and progress to the quarter-finals. Humbert lacks the experience at this level, and despite his talent, Djokovic should prove to be too much for him.
