Liverpool will look to keep their title hopes alive when they travel to face Newcastle United on Saturday in the Premier League.
The Reds are reeling from the Champions League defeat they suffered midweek. Barcelona defeated them 3-0 in the first leg of the semi-final. Lionel Messi scored twice, and the tie looks to be all but over before the second leg next week at Anfield. Liverpool have staged comebacks in European competitions, but Jurgen Klopp must know that this mountain is a huge one to climb.
As far as the Premier League title race is concerned, Liverpool are still in with a shout. They trail Manchester City by one point, as both sides have two games left to play. After playing Newcastle, Liverpool will round off their league campaign at Anfield against Wolves. The city will play Leicester City and Brighton, and they are favorites to retain their title.
Klopp and his players won’t give up though, as they attempt to bring the first Premier League title to Anfield. Liverpool are on an eight-game winning streak in the league. Their last game was against Huddersfield, and the Terriers were subjected to a 5-0 thrashing. Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah both scored twice then, and they will be crucial to Liverpool’s hopes yet again. Klopp needs a considerable effort in the second leg on Tuesday, and warming up with a win against Newcastle would be ideal.
But don’t expect Newcastle to give in so easily. Even though they are safe from relegation, the Magpies have it in them to upset the big sides. They beat Manchester City at St. James’ Park in January, a result which was a huge one for Liverpool. The atmosphere in the ground was loud that day, and the home faithful will conjure up the same on Saturday. Rafa Benitez has Liverpool connections, but he will give his former employers a challenge.
Benitez managed at Anfield for six years and led Liverpool to a Champions League triumph in 2005. But even he could not taste Premier League success there, which Klopp is attempting to do. Benitez has done a great job at Newcastle, and they are comfortably safe from relegation for a second consecutive season. The Magpies are currently 13th in the table, a healthy 11 points clear of the danger zone.
Roberto Firmino could return for Liverpool as he was rested against Huddersfield. He started on the bench against Barcelona, and he should return to the starting lineup. Naby Keita is the other doubt for Liverpool after he was injured against Barcelona. Newcastle have problems as well. Both Ayoze Perez and Miguel Almiron could miss the game with injuries. Perez has been in great form of late, and he will be sorely missed.
Newcastle United vs Liverpool Prediction
Liverpool go into the game as favorites, and they should win to keep the title race alive. Expect it to be a tough game, with less than 2.5 goals in total. Newcastle will be organized defensively, but Liverpool should have enough quality to claim the three points.
