Gennaro Gattuso will take charge of his first match as Napoli coach when Parma visit the Stadio San Paolo on Saturday.
Despite the win on Tuesday against Genk, the Champions League tie was Carlo Ancelotti’s last game in charge. He was appointed as Napoli boss in 2018, replacing the much-beloved Maurizio Sarri. In his first season in Naples, his side finished second in the Serie A. It was a commendable first campaign, but Napoli failed to trouble runaway champions Juventus. The fans expected the team to build from that season, but that has failed to materialize so far.
Napoli Match Form
Napoli are seventh in the table as it stands, eight points clear of the top four. They have not won a league game in the last seven attempts. In that time Napoli have lost twice, drawing the other five. The squad at Ancelotti’s disposal merited a better display, and it resulted in his firing. However, they impressed against Genk on the way to recording a 4-0 win. Arkadiusz Milik netted a hat-trick and Dries Mertens scored with a penalty. That win secured Napoli’s qualification for the round of 16 behind Liverpool in Group E.
Gattuso was Milan manager last season, but he was sacked in the summer. An iconic figure in his playing days, he has relatively less experience in the coaching field. His man-management is much more famous, which would be needed at this time at Napoli. The likes of Parma and Torino are right behind them, and slipping further in the table won’t be tolerated in Naples.
Parma Match Form
Parma have the same points as Napoli, but they are in eighth place due to an inferior goal difference. They finished 14th last season, and this campaign has definitely been an improvement. Parma have lost just once in the last six games in all competitions. That loss was a 1-0 result against Milan in early December. Last week they faced Sampdoria and claimed a 1-0 win. Juraj Kucka scored the only goal of the game for Parma.
Despite having less of the ball in the game, Parma scored with their only shot on target to get the win. Andreas Cornelius has been their top-scorer this season so far. He has five goals from just four starts, which is impressive. Manager Roberto D’Aversa will hope that he will sustain this goalscoring form in the coming weeks.
Napoli have dominated over Parma in recent weeks. Last season they won both the games by a combined scoreline of 7-0. Napoli have not lost in the last four head to head encounters with Parma. However, this season, both of them are closer to each other.
Parma vs Napoli Betting Tips
Parma will make it tough for Napoli, but they should return to winning ways in the league. After Tuesday’s win over Genk, another goal-laden performance should be in store from Napoli. The total goals should be over 2.5 in the game. Gattuso will get his first win in charge as the manager in front of the home fans.
