Montpellier will host Marseille at the La Mosson on Saturday in the Ligue 1.
Marseille Match Form
In the last couple of weeks, Marseille’s hold on the second place has dropped somewhat. They were 11 points clear of Rennes three games ago, but that gap has decreased to just six points now. Marseille have dropped five points in their last three league games. The second spot is the last Champions League automatic spot and Marseille will not want to go through the qualifying stages. With ten games left in the season, Marseille will want to keep Rennes and other sides at a fair distance.
Marseille hosted Amiens last week, and they were 2-0 up after an hour of play. Morgan Sanson and Dimitri Payet scored on either side of half-time to put Marseille in a comfortable position. The score was 2-0 till the 80th minute, but then Amiens struck. Serhou Guirassy made it 2-1 before Saman Ghoddos scored late into stoppage time to rescue a point for his side.
The draw was a tough pill to swallow for Marseille, considering the position in which they were beforehand. Amiens had just three shots on target in the entire game. Marseille’s defence has become somewhat leaky in recent games. They have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five games in all competitions. In that time Marseille have conceded nine goals. Before those five games, they had kept three clean sheets in a row.
Montpellier Match Form
Meanwhile, Montpellier’s recent form is even worse than that of Marseille. They have lost three out of their last four league games and now stand eighth in the table. All of a sudden, any European aspirations they had now look slim. Three teams stand between them and fourth-placed Lille. Also, Lille have opened up a healthy nine-point lead over Montpellier. Fourth place is the final league position which will fetch a side European football.
Montpellier’s only win in the last four was a 3-0 triumph over Strasbourg on their home turf. Teji Savanier scored two goals for Montpellier in that game. However, any confidence from that win was wiped in their next game. Montpellier travelled to face Rennes and got thrashed 5-0. Rennes thoroughly dominated the game and had nine efforts on target compared to just one from Montpellier.
H2H & Last Meetings
The head to head record between these two sides is not conclusive. In their last seven meetings, both sides have won two games apiece. The other three games have ended in draws. Four out of the last five meetings have seen under 2.5 goals. The last clash ended in a 1-1 draw in September. That game saw three red cards in the dying stages in an entertaining ending.
