Safwat will take on Baghdatis in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships first round this Tuesday night. Both players have already met nine years ago in a Davis Cup game between Egypt and Cyprus in Limassol, which ended in Mohamed Safwat defeat in straight sets.
Mohamed Safwat appeared in a number of Challenger events and Futures Series this year, but failed to progress in the fourth round of any major events. Safwat is making his second main draw appearance in the Dubai Tennis Championship, and is expected to finish in the top-200, after slipping to 218 earlier this month. However, Safwat is an excellent player having more ability than his ATP rankings suggests. He became the first Egyptian since 1996 to contest a Grand Slam, Roland Garros and was the first Egyptian player since 1997 to reach the final of a Challenger tournament.
Baghdatis, ranked 128 in the world, was a former finalist in Dubai in 2016, and is making his ninth appearance in the tournament. Baghdatis are in disastrous form since 2017, lost in the first round in seven out of the 15 ATP tournaments in 2017, first round exits in many of the tournaments in 2018, and reached in just two quarter-finals of the Challenger Titles in 2019. Overall, he has played exceptional tennis so far in his career, finished as the runner-up at the 2006 Australian Open and a semifinalist at the 2006 Wimbledon Championships while reaching a career-high ATP singles ranking of world No. 8 in August 2006.
