Minnesota United will host Columbus Crew at Allianz Field on Saturday in the MLS.
Minnesota are sixth in the Western Conference, and they are looking to ensure a playoff spot this season. They have a three-point buffer right now, as Vancouver in the eighth spot are three points below them. Minnesota finished in 10th place last season, missing out on the playoffs completely. Coach Adrian Heath will be hoping for a better outcome this time around for his side.
They have won just once in the last six league games. That win was a 1-0 result against D. C. United, as Angelo Rodriguez scored a late winner in that game. Last week Minnesota played Chicago, who beat them 2-0. Chicago dominated the game, and scored both the goals in the first half and eased to the win. Their attack has impressed this season, and only two other sides in the Western Conference have scored more goals than them. Darwin Quintero is their top scorer with five goals. Angelo Rodriguez is a close second with four strikes to his name. Quintero did not start against Chicago, but he will surely make the starting lineup against Columbus. The Colombian is a talented player, and he has three assists as well, aside from being the top scorer. His return will be a massive boost to Minnesota.
Meanwhile, opponents Colombus are struggling at the moment. Their season started great, as they won four out of their opening six games. All of those wins came with clean sheets, and they were looking like a formidable outfit. But their form has taken a turn for the worse since then. Columbus have lost six of their last seven MLS games.
In that run, they have managed to score just five goals. On the contrary, their opponents have scored 14 goals in that time. This run must be a real worry for coach Caleb Porter. He will be keen on changing that form as soon as possible. Last week they played LAFC and lost 3-0. It was a thoroughly one-sided game dominated by their opponents. Columbus had just one shot on target in the entire match.Embed from Getty Images
They have struggled for goals all season, and have mustered only 12 so far. Gyasi Zardes is their leading scorer with four goals to his name. Aside from that, no one else has stepped up. Only one side in the Eastern Conference has scored fewer goals than Colombus this season. Away from home, they are averaging 0.6 goals per game.
Minnesota United vs Columbus Crew Prediction
Minnesota will go into the game as favorites. They should claim the win, which will further compound Columbus’ misery. Columbus’ poor away record means that Minnesota are a safe bet for success. A clean sheet is also likely for the home side, and the total goals should be less than 2.5 in this game.
