Miami Heat will begin life after Dwayne Wade when they host the Memphis Grizzlies in their first NBA game of the season on October 23, 2019.
Wade was an amazing player for the Heat, and he delivered three championships in his career in Miami. But the guard has called it quits, and the AmericanAirlines Arena has a new star now. Jimmy Butler signed with the Heat in the summer as he seeks out a new challenge. Butler began last season in Minnesota, and he demanded a trade after issues with the players and the coaching staff. Butler was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, where he played till the season ended.
Butler was a free agent, and numerous teams wanted his signature. He turned to the Heat to reignite his career, which has not delivered after he left Chicago. The Heat have a promising squad to support the forward. They have Goran Dragic at point guard, who is capable of producing when needed. Dragic was an All-Star in 2018, and he averaged 13.7 points and 4.8 assists last season.
Waiters should take the shooting guard spot on the roster, provided he deals with the injury issues. He averaged 12 points per game last season. Miami have the likes of Kelly Olynyk and Justise Winslow who should fill in as and when needed. They signed Meyers Leonard in the summer from Portland, who should provide a useful option off the bench. Coach Erik Spoelstra has been with Miami since 2008, and his nous will be handy as usual. After failing to make the playoffs last time, getting there this time will be the main goal for the Heat.
As for Memphis, they are officially into ‘rebuild mode’. Marc Gasol and Mike Conley were the two players who defined the last couple of seasons for them, and they are both gone now. Gasol went to Toronto last season, and Conley signed with the Jazz in the off-season. In their place, Memphis have a couple of promising youngsters to fill in.
Ja Morant will headline them, as Memphis snapped up the Murray State player at second place in the 2019 draft. Morant became the first-ever college player to average 20 points and 10 assists last season. Conley’s shoes are big ones to fill, and the transition will be rough. But Morant has the potential to become something special in Memphis.
Jaren Jackson Jr. has one year of experience, but he will continue to grow aside Morant. This duo is sure to make the Memphis fans excited for the future. Veterans like Jonas Valanciunas and Jae Crowder are there to provide experience. The playoffs are far away for now, and building this project will take precedence for now in Memphis.
