Melbourne United will aim to get their first win of the season when they host the New Zealand Breakers at the Melbourne Arena on Saturday.
After reaching the final last time, Melbourne have started the season poorly. They have played thrice and have failed to win even once. All three games ended in very close losses. The first one was a 91-88 loss against neighbors South Eastern Melbourne Phoenix. In the next game, they faced defending champions Perth Wildcats and succumbed to a 94-93 loss. Their last game was also against the Wildcats, and this time Perth beat them by just two points.
Their performances have been encouraging, and it is a case of ‘so close but so far’ for Melbourne. They have been scoring near 90 points in all of those games, which is a good sign for their offence. Melo Trimble has been one of their star players this season. He has scored 62 points in the three games so far. Shawn Long has been the other outstanding performer in the side. He has contributed in points and rebounds as well.
Melbourne have no problem in the offence, but they have been unlucky in all three games. They won 18 games in the regular season last time, which was the most among all teams. Perth beat them 3-1 in the final, which was their second straight appearance in the showpiece event. Melbourne won the title the season before when they beat the Adelaide 36ers themselves. This time they find themselves in the bottom half, still waiting for their first win.
Just like Melbourne, the New Zealand Breakers have also not picked up a win yet. They faced the Sydney Kings in the first game and lost 96-91. Scotty Hopson starred for the Breakers, and he scored 27 points in the game. Corey Webster scored 21 points as well, but that was not enough in the end. In their second game, the offence fell flat and managed to score just 66 points. Sydney were the opponents again, and they claimed a 76-66 win.
The Breakers were leading at half-time in the second game, but they collapsed after the interval. They scored just 21 points, and Sydney scored 36 to overturn the deficit and claim the win. Corey Webster top-scored with 14 points, but he did not receive much help from his teammates.
New Zealand did not qualify for the playoffs last season, and they will go again under new coach Dan Shamir. They need to spruce up their offence in the coming games, as that is a weak point of the side. The likes of Hopson and Webster will be relied upon to provide the scoring.
Melbourne United vs New Zealand Breakers Betting Tips
Both sides are rooting for a win, but Melbourne will be the favorites to get their first win of the campaign. They have played well this season, and the Breakers don’t have the offensive firepower to contend with Melbourne. The hosts should get the win by a margin of ten points or more.
