Manchester United vs Manchester City Preview

The Manchester Derby will take place at Old Trafford this Wednesday in a clash which could have a significant impact on the Premier League season. Title-chasing City will travel to United searching for a win which would see them take a sizeable step towards the title.

Pep Guardiola’s side suffered a heart-breaking defeat last week to Spurs in the Champions League, which extinguished their quadruple hopes. A treble is still on the cards though. City trail Liverpool by two points at the top of the table, but this derby is their game in hand. A win at Old Trafford will see them seize the pole position with three games to go in the season.

Despite their European troubles, City’s Premier League form has been second to none. They have won their last 10 Premier League games, and each one with some certainty. Spurs were the latest casualties, as they were defeated 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. Phil Foden got the solitary goal, as the youngster scored his first Premier League goal.

United is arguably City’s most tough opponent left in the league this season, as Leicester, Burnley, and Brighton are the next three. Guardiola will be reasonably confident of taking the three points in those, which makes the derby a huge game. If they fail to win it, Liverpool will seize control of their destiny. Considering the form they are in, not many would bet on them ‘slipping’ up.

City’s neighbors United have endured a lousy week. They were defeated 4-0 by Everton on Sunday, which was a severe blow to their top four hopes. That loss was unquestionably the worst one in Solskjaer’s tenure, and it came after a string of listless performances. Since United beat Paris Saint-Germain, they have played eight games in all competitions. The Red Devils have won only two, losing the rest.

Barcelona knocked them out of the Champions League on Tuesday, courtesy of a 4-0 aggregate scoreline. United are now sixth in the league, and their chances of making the top four are not secure. All of Spurs, Chelsea, and Arsenal are above them, and in better positions to make next season’s Champions League.

They will play Chelsea after City, before rounding off the season with games against Huddersfield and Cardiff. The next two fixtures will be crucial in their final league position.

United’s injury problems are not over yet, as both Eric Bailly and Ander Herrera are injury doubts. Luke Shaw should make a return after serving his suspension. Kevin De Bruyne got injured again for City, but Guardiola has riches in that department to replace him with.

Manchester United vs Manchester City Prediction

Despite different forms, the clash will be a tight one considering that it is a derby. The total goals in this one should be less than 3.5, as United will likely take a conservative approach. A draw seems to be a likely result, as United should stop their slump.
