Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur Preview
Manchester City will play host to Tottenham in the Premier League just three days after their incredible Champions League quarter-final second leg. The game ended 4-3 in favor of City, but Spurs progressed on the away goals rule courtesy of their 1-0 home win in the first leg.
Pep Guardiola’s side experienced a cruel game, as they came within touching distance of the semi-finals. Raheem Sterling scored in stoppage time to hand City the tie, but the goal was ruled for offside by VAR. The whole stadium had erupted after Sterling scored, and they couldn’t believe after it was ruled out.
Even if the Champions League is not a possibility, the Premier League certainly is. City trail leaders Liverpool by two points, but they do have a game in hand. If they win each of their five remaining games, the trophy will return to the Etihad. Liverpool are in ominous form, and dropping even two points could prove to be costly for Guardiola’s men.
City’s record against the top six is excellent this season, as they have claimed 19 points out of a possible 24. Despite Wednesday’s loss, City’s form this calendar year has been stunning. That game was the only one out of the last 17 which they have failed to win. A 9-game winning streak in the Premier League has followed, and they will hope to continue that against Spurs.
Spurs are head over heels in delight, as a Champions League semi-final awaits them. Mauricio Pochettino’s side impressed at the Etihad and had to go through some struggles before emerging victoriously. Son Heung-min scored twice for them after he scored the solitary goal in the first leg. He has picked up the baton after Harry Kane’s injury, which he has done many times in the recent past.
In the Premier League, Spurs are engulfed in a tight top-four race. They are currently in third place, but just a point clear of Chelsea in fifth place. Both Manchester United and Arsenal are also in the thick of it, and every aspect is vital at this stage. The four sides are competing for two spots, and conserving that third spot is crucial for Spurs.
They have won their last two league games, after a miserable month of March in terms of league form. Those were against Crystal Palace and Huddersfield, which were played in their brand new stadium. Lucas Moura netted a hat-trick in the last match against Huddersfield, and he could line up alongside Son and Llorente in the attack.
Spurs will be without the injured Kane, as well as Mousa Sissoko. Harry Winks could return for them though. Guardiola has everyone at his disposal, and the likes of Leroy Sane and Fernandinho should start.
Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur Prediction
The city will be bent upon bouncing back, and they will go into the tie as favorites. Just like the midweek tie, both sides should score in this one as well. The total goals should be over 2.5, and City should clinch three crucial points.
