Major League Soccer (MLS): Toronto FC vs Atlanta United Preview and Prediction

Toronto FC will host Atlanta United at BMO Field in the MLS on Wednesday.

Both the sides are in the Eastern Conference, looking to get into the playoffs. Toronto are worse off, fighting to stay in the playoff spots. They are in seventh place as it stands. Chicago have the same points, but they are one place below on the tie-breaker. Toronto have a game in hand over them, which they will hope to win. Other teams like Orlando and Columbus are also close behind them hoping to make the playoffs.

Toronto have been on a poor run of results of late. They have failed to win a single game in their last eight attempts. During that time they have drawn three and lost five. This run has resulted in their slide down the table. After two successive draws, they faced FC Dallas in their last game. Dallas thrashed Toronto 3-0 to pile more misery upon them. Toronto were thoroughly dominated in that game which extended their winless streak to eight matches.

Toronto’s defense has been one of their major problems this season. They have conceded 28 league goals, and only two teams in their conference have conceded more. This increases the pressure on their goalscorers. Alejandro Pozuelo and Jozy Altidore have both scored five goals in the MLS for Toronto this season.

Atlanta are seven points above their opponents despite playing a game less. They have impressed this season, and only Philadelphia have won more games in the conference than Atlanta. Josef Martinez has been a significant reason why. The striker has scored ten goals for them this season which is the best for Atlanta by a large margin. Ezequiel Barco is second on the list with four goals.

Atlanta are currently fourth in the Eastern Conference. Both Montreal and D. C. United are just a point above them, but both have played more games than Atlanta. If they win those other games, they will firmly hold second place in the conference. The first place might be beyond them, as Philadelphia are five points ahead. But they have played more games as well, so there is scope for Atlanta.

Their last game was a US Open Cup clash against Columbus. Atlanta won the round of 16 tie 3-2 to progress to the quarter-final where they will face Saint Louis FC. Brandon Vasquez scored a brace for Atlanta in the game, and Miles Robinson got the other goal. Atlanta have won four out of their last six league games. They have won their last two MLS games by a combined 5-0 scoreline.

Toronto FC vs Atlanta United Prediction

Atlanta will go into the game as favorites to extend Toronto’s winless run. Toronto are in a drastic patch and Atlanta have enjoyed a great run recently. They should get the win to jump to second place in the table. The total goals should be more than 2.5 in this game. Both sides should score, and a clean sheet is unlikely to be seen. Atlanta should get the three points in the end.
