Lyon host Lille at the Groupama Stadium in the Ligue 1 tournament on Sunday.
Lyon are third in the Ligue 1 table, and finishing there will hand them a path to next season’s Champions League qualifiers. Saint-Etienne are in fourth place, and they are just three points behind Lyon. Bruno Genesio’s side can’t afford to slip up if they want to maintain their stay in the elite competition. This will be Genesio’s last season at the club. He was appointed in December 2015, and this season was arguably the best of his time in Lyon. Jose Mourinho is reportedly leading the race to become the new Lyon manager.
Two consecutive league wins have enabled Lyon to put a three-game losing streak behind them. Angers were defeated 2-1 two weeks ago. Last week, Lyon overcame a deficit to beat Bordeaux 3-2. Memphis Depay, Maxwel Cornet, and Mousa Dembele got the goals for Lyon. Genesio has developed a young squad who have impressed hugely at times. The likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Houssem Aouar and Memphis Depay have come to the fore this season.
Lyon have won three out of their last five league games. Their defense has been one of the few weaknesses they possess. Lyon have kept just one clean sheet in their previous 12 games in all competitions. They have conceded 43 goals this season, which is more than eight sides in Ligue 1. But their attack has compromised for that leaky defense, and only two teams have scored more than their 58 goals.
Lille are one place above their opponents. They are in second place, a whopping 16 points behind leaders PSG. Lyon are six points behind them, and direct entry into next season’s Champions League is likely for Lille if Lyon stay there. Winning on Sunday would make that all but certain.
They are unbeaten in their last five league games, scoring 14 goals in that run. Last week they won emphatically, beating Nimes 5-0. Nicolas Pepe scored in that game, and the winger has been Lyon’s best player by far this season. He has recorded 20 goals and 11 assists in Ligue 1. That goal involvement has been bettered only by Kylian Mbappe. Pepe has been linked with numerous clubs, and he could be on his way out in the summer.
Lyon vs Lille Prediction
The head to head record is far from conclusive, and the last two meetings with these sides ended in draws. Despite playing on the road, Lille will be the favorites for this one. Their recent form is good, and they thrashed champions PSG 5-1 a couple of weeks ago. Lyon have clinched close wins in their last two games, not convincing in either of them.
Goals will be plenty in this one and expect more than 2.5 in total. Both sides should score as two good attacking units will go head to head. Lille should have enough to claim the away win and cement their hold on second place in the process.
