Liverpool host a struggling Burnley side as they look to get their title challenge back on track. The Reds relinquished top spot to Manchester City last week, courtesy of a goalless draw at Everton. Burnley meanwhile will look to claim a surprise result to keep the relegation zone at bay.
Even though Jurgen Klopp’s side is just one point off the top, the mood in the camp will not be jolly. They were 7 points clear of City in the first week of January when the two sides faced off. Pep Guardiola’s side prevailed then, and Liverpool have dropped off ever since. They have drawn four of their last six league games, and a lack of cutting edge in the attack has been one of the main reasons.
Mohamed Salah’s form has dropped, and the Egyptian was guilty of missing chances against Everton. Fulham should be an easier game, and Klopp will be boosted by the return of Roberto Firmino from injury. Liverpool have to play Bayern Munich in the Champions League four days after Fulham, so getting a win against Burnley would help their confidence immensely.
Burnley were on a great run recently, but they have lost the last two games. They were on an eight-game unbeaten run, which came to an end against Newcastle. Last week it was Crystal Palace who defeated them, by a 3-1 scoreline at Turf Moor. Sean Dyche’s side is still 5 points above the drop zone, but he will want to increase that gap sooner than later.
Liverpool vs Burnley Prediction
The loss against Palace must have sapped the Clarets’ confidence, and traveling to Anfield presents a tough ask. Dyche’s team has scraped results against the bigger sides, and he will be hopeful of something similar on Saturday. He will mostly adopt a defensive approach and hope to smother Liverpool’s attack.
“The season is not over, and we will not give up,” said Jurgen Klopp after his side conceded first place to Manchester City at the weekend. The narrative around the clash will be regarding the title race. Liverpool need to bounce back, and arguably they will get the three points against Burnley. The two sides met at Turf Moor in December, and Liverpool won 3-1 on the day.
Despite their recent struggles, Liverpool will go into the tie as clear favourites. Burnley have conceded the fourth-most goals in the Premier League, and expect Liverpool to add to that. The Reds should bounce back and defeat Burnley to get back to winning ways and heap some pressure on Manchester City. Also, Liverpool is expected to win in both halves of the game.
