Lille will host Montpellier to kick off the recent round of Ligue 1 fixtures on Friday.
Lille Match Form
Lille have followed up last season with another impressive campaign this time. They are third in the table and favorites to qualify for the Champions League yet again. Leaders Paris Saint-Germain are 11 points ahead of them, and a title challenge is out of the question. But finishing in the top three will be the main goal for them this season. Rennes in fourth are just a point below them, and the likes of Bordeaux and Nantes are close by as well. The race for the European places is a tight one this time.
Lille have won the last three league games on the bounce. All three of those have come by virtue of a solitary goal. Victor Osimhen’s penalty gave them the win against Dijon before Nanitamo Ikone scored against Lyon to get the win. Lille faced Brest last weekend and recorded another 1-0 win. Osimhen was the man on target yet again for Lille. In his debut season at the club, Osimhen has scored nine league goals already. Still just 20, he is looking like a great summer signing.
Unlike their league campaign, the Champions League has not been kind to Lille. They sit at the bottom of the group after five games with just one point. Lille are certain to finish last in Group H behind Ajax, Valencia, and Chelsea. Their only point in the competition came against Valencia two months ago.
Montpellier Match Form
Montpellier are 10th in the table, but they are only five points behind Lille. They have lost just once in the last seven league games. That loss came against PSG last weekend as the champions claimed a 3-1 win. An own goal from Leandro Paredes gave Montpellier the lead, and the score was 1-0 at half-time. But PSG scored thrice in seven minutes to claim the three points at the La Mosson.
Montpellier have scored two or more goals in four out of the last six games, which is a good sign for their attack. Andy Delort is their top-scorer with five goals, and Florent Mollet is not far behind with four. They have conceded 17 goals at the other end in Ligue 1, which is a slight improvement from last season. Montpellier have kept two clean sheets in the last five games.
In the head to head record, both sides have won once in the last four encounters. The other two games have ended in draws. The last three games have seen just three goals. Both teams played out a goalless draw in February, which is the last time they played each other.
