Juventus will take on a youthful Ajax side in Turin after the two sides shared the spoils in their quarter-final first leg. That game ended 1-1, and all is left to play for in Tuesday’s second leg.
Juventus have the Serie A title in the bag, as they hold a lead of 17 points over second-placed Napoli. Massimiliano Allegri’s side has lost just two league games all season, which is a strong record. Cristiano Ronaldo scored first in last week’s first leg before David Neres canceled the Portuguese’s header. Ronaldo will be crucial yet again for Juventus.
The striker starred in the last round, as he scored a hat-trick against Atletico Madrid to send Juventus to the quarter-finals. He is the all-time top-scorer in the Champions League, and hopefully, for Juventus, the tally will increase on Tuesday. SPAL defeated Juve on the weekend, as a weak-side lost a 1-0 lead.
Ronaldo did not feature in that game, nor did other vital players like Leonardo Bonucci, Miralem Pjanic, and Mario Mandzukic. Juventus are looking to make their third semi-final in five years. They reached the final in 2017, but Ronaldo and Real Madrid were victorious then.
In contrast, Ajax are making noise at this level after quite some time. They have not reached the semi-finals of the Champions League since 1997, and this is a chance as good as any. Just like Juventus, Ajax also produced a memorable performance in the Round of 16. They beat holders Real Madrid 4-1 at the Bernabeu to establish themselves as dark horses for the title.
Last week’s performance against Juve was impressive as well. Ajax dominated the game, especially in the second half. They failed to take their chances, despite having more shots and possession than Juve. Ajax are going strong in the Eredivisie as well, and they lead the league on goal difference ahead of PSV Eindhoven. Erik ten Hag’s side beat Excelsior 6-2 on Saturday, as Klaas-Jan Huntelaar netted a hat-trick.
Dusan Tadic played in a more profound role in that game, but he should move ahead for the Juve game. Neres and Hakim Ziyech will be on either flank to complete a fearsome trio, which caused Juventus problems in the first leg.
Injuries and Suspensions
Noussair Mazraoui is back from suspension for Ajax, but left-back Nicolas Tagliafico will miss due to his suspension. Frenkie de Jong is a doubt, as he has a hamstring problem.
Blaise Matuidi is carrying a minor injury for Juventus, but he should be fit to start. Aside from him, there are no injury worries. Mandzukic and Ronaldo will headline the attack, as Federico Bernardeschi will start in attack with them.
The home side will be the favorites, and they should get the better of Ajax to progress. Ajax will cause them problems, however. Juve’s experience should be the difference, and Ronaldo will be keen to stamp his mark yet again. Both sides have a chance of scoring, with Tadic and Ronaldo being the key men.
