There’s a bit of class, a bit of flair but most importantly there’s a lot of potential. Nitish Rana broke through with KKR last season and even during that tenure he did make his presence felt whenever he got a chance but we have to admit that the impact Nitish Rana has had in this IPL already in just two games is much more than what he was able to do last year.
In his two innings, the first against Sunrisers where he scored 60 odd runs and the second innings today where he just dominated the bowling with another 50 at a strike rate of close to 200 has shown a sense of poise at the pitch which is not shown by everyone. He’s looked comfortable, balanced and hasn’t really let on too many weaknesses until now.
Nitish was always highly regarded by Gautam Gambhir and it is starting to show that the former Indian opener was correct about him. The ease with which Rana scored those runs shows the amount of talent this player has and all that he needs to do right now is focus on going to the next level and scoring a big one.
If one really needs to measure how impressive he has been you just need to look at the batting line-up of KKR. A legitimate upstart by the name of Shubhman Gill doesn’t get a chance to bat higher because of how impressive Rana has been and in all honesty, he’s making the most of the opportunities put in front of him. As I said earlier, Rana has been regarded highly by Gautam Gambhir for a long time and it is true that he is starting to make a mark on the big stage.
The question though for him is how he kicks on from this and makes it count. There have been too many of the one hit wonders in IPL in the past as well be it the Manan Vohra or Paul Valthaty of their time who were not able to make the next step so Nitish needs to be aware and keep going. He’s laid the foundation well, all it needs to be seen is whether he’ll build a tower over it or just be content with this.
