CSK vs KXIP Preview
One team is coming off a surprise loss while the other coming off a surprise win, this match is a match between the tournament favorites and defending champions and a team which has, to its credit overachieved superbly so far in this tournament.
Punjab, to the surprise of many, has performed admirably in the competition and the best part for them has been the nerve that they have shown. Two of their three wins have come in situations where they seemed completely out of it.
Chennai on their part has had a typical IPL, and they’ve racked up wins after wins by putting together clinical performances in every match. The match against Mumbai was a blip, but it revealed a couple of crucial weakness for the Chennai team which were a lack of strong death bowling combination and a slightly out of form top order which got exposed against Mumbai.
Chennai Super Kings
Form Guide (LWWW)
CSK does have some minor headaches that they need to deal with. The biggest of them is the lack of runs at the top. Neither Shane Watson nor Ambati Rayudu has a big score under their belt, and the team has relied primarily on its spinners to keep the total to a minimum.
Coming to Chennai might be a welcome change for the team as it is well suited to these pitches and it could help them get back to winning ways. In terms of team combination, Mohit Sharma might make way for Harbhajan Singh because of the condition of the pitch.
The player under the spotlight
Rayudu was able to light up IPL last year with his performance, but he’s been a bit off-color this time around. With World Cup just around the corner and the No.4 slot in the playing eleven is still up for grabs. Rayudu will need to step up if he doesn’t want to fall out of contention.
Probable XI: Shane Watson, Ambati Rayadu, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav, Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, Deepak Chahar, Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir, Shardul Thakur
Kings XI Punjab
Form Guide (WWLW)
A Tamil captain is leading a Punjabi side against a Tamil team. Things like these can only happen in the IPL. No-one expected Punjab to be among the table-toppers after four games into the season, but such has been the grit of this team that they’ve achieved this admirably.
Now they enter another match as an underdog against the tournament favorites in their backyard and yet again it would be the opposition that would be expected to pick up the pieces.
With a slow pitch on offer, Ashwin might be interested in maybe giving Murugan Ashwin and Mujeeb both a game, but it would be interesting to see how they go about it. Chris Gayle if he’s back from his niggle walks back into the team and might take the place of Hardus Viljoen.
The player under the spotlight
Another day, another game and yet again the spotlight would be on KL Rahul to finally come good. He’s had just one good start in 4 games, and the pressure would be on him to keep the selectors happy.
Probable XI: Chris Gayle, KL Rahul, Mayank Aggarwal, Sarfaraz Khan, David Miller, Mandeep Singh, Ravi Ashwin, Sam Curran, Mohammed Shami, Mujeeb Ur Rahman
With a slow pitch expected to be on offer and dew not able to have that big of an effect, even a score of around 150 would be competitive here.
