Head to Head: KXIP 10-11 MI
KXIP Vs MI Preview
Both the teams come into this match following a pretty similar route where they’ve fought closely to win one and got out-muscled in the second one. Mumbai would take a lot of pride in the way they defended their score against RCB (albeit with a bit of controversy on the last ball) but it doesn’t take away some teething issues that the team faces with Pollard’s form and his contribution to the team being the most important one right now.
Punjab, on the other hand, are the underdogs in this tournament but would take confidence in the form of Gayle, Mayank, and Miller. They made a mistake by dropping Mujeeb and should be looking to bring him back into the mix. There was a clear lack of planning in the last game as they set about trying to something that was not broken and ultimately paid for it.
Looking at the two sides while Punjab might fancy their chances Mumbai should ultimately be looking to flex their muscles and start building on their win against RCB.Team News
Kings XI Punjab
Coming to their home ground would be the kind of welcome the team needs after having its captain mired in controversy for a while now. Punjab tried to fix things that weren’t even broken in their second match against KKR and they paid heavily for it. Mujeeb needs to make a return to the team as he does add a lot to the team. Other than that the team would be really backing their chances to beat Mumbai if any of its match-winners click.
The player under the spotlight
KL Rahul has really had a disappointing time of late and whenever he has featured on the big stage it has been a struggle for him. He’s looked oddly under confident and at a time when he needs to make an impact he hasn’t really set the world alight with his batting. On a flat track at Mohali, he would be looking to make a sizeable contribution if he really has to stay in contention for a spot in the world cup squad.
Probable XI: Chris Gayle, KL Rahul, Mayank Aggarwal, Sarfaraz Khan, David Miller, Mandeep Singh, Ravi Ashwin, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammed Shami, Andrew Tye
It’s about time Mumbai admitted that the tried tested and failed experiment of Keiron Pollard is just not working anymore. When you have someone like Ben Cutting in the wings who should ideally contribute in a better way with the ball and has proven himself as a batsman by opening in the Big Bash, there shouldn’t be too many doubters in case you swap the two. Pollard has the ability to win you matches but it’s been eons since he has actually delivered for the team.
The player under the spotlight
Yuvraj Singh according to many was never going to make the playing eleven for Mumbai Indians in this tournament and was probably picked up in IPL 2019 for both his star power and experience. Two games in and Yuvraj has played both of them and left a mark as well. Is he the same Yuvraj of old? Not even close. When it comes to pace bowling he finds it really difficult to navigate his way through the period. But when it comes to the spinners, he’s been smashing them to all corners. Playing against his home team in his home ground will surely have all eyes glued to him when he walks out.
Probable XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Quinton de Kock, Suryakumar Yadav, Yuvraj Singh, Krunal Pandya, Hardik Pandya, Ben Cutting, Jasprit Bumrah, Mayank Markande, Mitchell McClenaghan, Lasith Malinga
IPL 2019 KXIP Vs MI Preview and Prediction
For Punjab to win they’ll need either of their big guys like Gayle, Rahul or Aggarwal to make a sizeable contribution at the top. If they’re able to then Punjab will be in with a shot. But if you compare it to Mumbai you have a complete lineup of match-winners who can change the game in no time. Hardik did it in the last game and same could be done by Krunal or others in the coming games.
Going into the match Mumbai start as favorites with a much-balanced side and more depth in their ranks and we can expect scores in the range of 180 on a flat deck.
