Inter Milan are set to welcome bottom-dwellers Chievo to the San Siro in the Serie A on Monday.
Luciano Spalletti’s side will look to consolidate their position in the top 4 as they look to play in the UEFA Champions League next season. The Nerazzurri are currently 3rd in the league table, with 63 points from 35 games. They are 10 points behind 2nd-placed Napoli, which rules them out of finishing higher with just three games to go.
Atalanta are leading the chasing pack and are only a point behind. AC Milan and AS Roma are further 3 points behind in 5th and 6th respectively. Thus, Inter will have to win a minimum of 2 games out of the last 3 to ensure their spot is secure and a relegated Chievo side offers the perfect opportunity to pick up 3 points.
Coming to their opponents, Chievo is already confirmed to get relegated and are set to play in the Serie B in the coming season. The Gialloblu never got going this season and currently sit at the bottom of the table.
Domenico Di Carlo’s side have just picked a paltry 15 points from 35 games this season. They are 9 points away from 19th-placed Frosinone, highlighting how bad their season has been.
Thus, Chievo have nothing but pride to play for, and an away trip to Inter is not the best of fixtures for them.
Inter will be without Marcelo Brozovic and Danilo D’Ambrosio due to suspension. Sime Vrsaljko and Andrea Palazzi are long-term absentees while Stefan de Vrij and Matias Vecino are doubts with thigh injuries. Either Miranda or Andrea Ranocchia will deputise for De Vrij, in case the Dutchman fails to make it.
Di Carlo has a fully-fit squad to choose from except for Luca Rossettini and Ezequiel Schelotto, with the latter already out for the season due to a knee injury.
Inter vs Chievo Prediction
In terms of head-to-head and form, this match-up is a no-contest. Inter have won 10 the last 12 meetings between the sides in all competitions and have never lost to Chievo at the San Siro in an official match.
The home side thumped the Gialloblu 5-0 last season at this ground and have won each of the previous three clashes at this venue. However, Chievo did hold Spalletti’s side to a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture, and they will look to take motivation from that.
Inter are winless in their last four home matches in the league, including three consecutive draws. Further, the Nerazzurri are not the best of scorers at home with just 23 goals scored in 17 home games.
However, they are pretty tight at the back with just nine goals conceded and can be expected to pick another clean sheet against Chievo. The visiting team are easily the worst team in the division, having conceded the most number of goals (73) and scored the least (25).
Further, Di Carlo’s side have won just two games all season and have lost in each of their visits to the top 8 teams in the league.
Thus, Inter will not have a better match to get back to winning ways, and Spalletti’s side should pick you a comfortable victory here.
