On paper, on form, it was an easy pick on who was supposed to be the favorite to win the series. Yes, the visitors had a chance to snatch a win or two but on the contrary, it was not expected that they’ll snatch both the series from the home team.
So why did it happen? Yes, it has to be admitted that the Aussies, on the whole, were a better unit all-around, but at the same time, you have to ask yourself whether the team that was put on the ground in each of the 5 matches, was it the best that India could have come up with?
India’s search for finding the perfect combination for the World Cup has turned into an obsession and this really hurt the rhythm with which the team played this series. Constant chopping and changing, playing a less than optimal eleven and still not finding the answers, you’ve got a team with eleven players who are under so much pressure to perform that they falter because of that. Rayadu despite averaging close to 50 is not a surety in the team and has consistently faced speculation.

Chahal despite getting a 6 wicket haul is in and out of the team because of which he has next to no rhythm when he turns up to play. What all this has done is it has killed the momentum that a legitimate World Cup challenger like India should have had before going to the World Cup and the team seems to be further than it has ever been from finding its ideal combination.
Who are the all-rounders that India might opt for? They relied on Hardik Pandya and what this series showed was how inept his replacements are. Jadeja or Chahal? We still don’t know the answer to that because Chahal never got a legitimate go. It was almost shocking to see India not picking the Leg Spin duo for the decider despite the knowledge that Chahal single-handedly destroyed the Australian team in Australia.
The series was a case India may be taking things too easy and Australia upping their game at the same time. In many ways, this series should have been the perfect harbinger for the World Cup but instead, it has left the team without any momentum and a lot of questions. One bad series can’t really nullify the hard work the team has put in for the last 3-4 years. So it would be really interesting to see what how much of an impact this series would have on the preparations for the World Cup.
