India vs West Indies First ODI Match Preview
Team India is coming off a fantastic 2-1 T20I series win against the West Indies. It was a hard-fought and entertaining series between two strong sides and Virat Kohli’s men triumphed eventually with their batting prowess.
The two teams will now move on to the 3-match ODI series, the first match of which begins from December 15 at Chennai.
While West Indies, who are the current reigning champions in T20Is, are a brute force in the shortest format, they haven’t been the greatest in ODI cricket of late. And taming a strong India at home will be very difficult for them. Thus, India will begin as favorites for the first ODI and the series.
Team India Performance
India have been very good in ODIs this year. They were league toppers at the ODI World Cup in England this year and went on to defeat West Indies 2-0 at their home in an ODI series earlier this year.
Their batting unit is dependent on their terrific top-order which has Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and skipper Virat Kohli who are all in superb form. However, India’s middle-order remains a concern with Rishabh Pant struggling for form and Shreyas Iyer still quite inexperienced. It remains to be seen if Kedar Jadhav or Manish Pandey are played as the finisher.
India’s bowling is quite good with Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar taking care of the seam bowling duties and one of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav being the lead spinner.
West Indies Match Form
West Indies are an unpredictable ODI side. But they have enough arsenal to take down any team on their day.
Exciting opener Sunil Ambris along with Even Lewis present an electric combination at the start. The dependable Shai Hope, along with skipper Kieron Pollard, Shimron Hetmyer and wicket-keeper batsman Nicholas Pooran will both be providing the middle-order that explosiveness. Brandon King might have an impact too.
On the bowling side, the West Indies area little weaker. Barring Sheldon Cottrell and Roston Chase, they don’t have many bowlers they can depend on. The likes of Hayden Walsh, Keemo Paul and Alzarri Joseph will have to be at their best against a strong Indian batting.
India vs West Indies, 1st ODI Cricket Betting Tips
The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai – the venue for the 1st ODI between India and the West Indies – has always been a good wicket. It’s good for batting but the ball also grips in the middle overs. The average score batting first here is 239 but we can expect the team batting first to score over 260-270 in this game.
In the last 6 ODIs between India and the West Indies, India has won 5 while one had no result. Playing at home, with a solid batting unit and dependable bowling force, they would certainly begin as favorites. Add to it, the unpredictable nature of the West Indies and their lack of patience in ODI cricket. It would thus take a lot for them to succeed against this Indian team.
West Indies are likely to do well on the batting front but with their inexperienced bowling they are unlikely to stop the might of the Indian batting.
Hence, back the Indian team to be the winners of the first ODI.
