Getafe will host Girona on Sunday as they look to cement their place in next season’s Champions League.
Getafe have their fate in their own hands. They are in fourth place in the LaLiga table with three games left to play. If they win all three of them, they will qualify for next season’s Champions League. Doing that will be a massive achievement for the club and coach Jose Bordalas. No one put Getafe as favorites to claim that fourth spot behind Barcelona and the two Madrid sides, but they are on course to do it.
Their recent form has been patchy as Getafe have won two of the last five league games. Last week they played Real Sociedad, who defeated them 2-1 at the Anoeta. Samuel Saiz got the goal for Getafe, but it was nothing more than a consolation. But they are strong at home compared to on the road. Bordalas’ side has lost just one game at the Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Perez in their last 10 in all competitions.
Sevilla are also on 55 points, and the tiebreaker separates the two sides. Getafe can’t afford to drop points, and the likes of Sevilla and Valencia will be eager to pounce if they do so. Jaime Mata will be the player Getafe will look towards for inspiration. The Spaniard has recorded 14 goals and six assists this season. He has been involved in 20 of Getafe’s 44 goals in the league.
Meanwhile, Girona have a different agenda on their hand. They are currently in 17th place, just two points adrift of safety. Valladolid are hoping to catch them, and they are in 18th place. Celta Vigo and Levante are level with Girona in terms of points, and the relegation battle promises to be a tight one.
Girona lost four consecutive games in April, but they did win last week. Arguably they won the game which was the hardest out of the five. Sevilla were the opponents, and Girona won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Portu. It was a massive win for coach Eusebio, and without those three points, his side would be in the relegation zone right now.
Levante will be Girona’s next opponents, and that match will have huge implications at the foot of the table. Taking something from Getafe will be necessary, as just three games are left in the season. Girona’s attack has been one of the worst in the league. Only Valladolid have scored fewer goals than Girona’s 35 strikes this season. The likes of Cristhian Stuani will be tasked to provide the attacking inspiration for them.
Getafe vs Girona Prediction
Getafe will go into the match as favorites, and the safe money is on a home win on Sunday. They will want to bounce back from last week’s defeat to maintain their fourth spot in the table. The total goals should be less than 2.5 in this match.
