Fulham vs Newcastle Preview
Relegated Fulham will hope to finish their season on a high when they host Newcastle at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
Fulham were relegated in the first week of April when Watford defeated them 4-1. That loss merely confirmed the inevitable for the London side. They will head back to the Championship after a solitary year in the Premier League. Most relegated teams go down meekly, but not this Fulham unit. They have impressed in recent weeks under interim boss Scott Parker.
After losing to Watford, Fulham stitched a three-game winning streak. They claimed victories over Everton, Bournemouth, and Cardiff in those three weeks. Surprisingly, they also kept a clean sheet in all those games. Those three clean sheets took their tally for the season to five. Their three game winning streak came to an end when they suffered defeat against Wolves by a narrow 1-0 scoreline last Saturday. Arguably it has come late, but Parker seems to have found the right starting eleven. Their defense has impressed in recent weeks, which had been atrocious for most of the season. Despite conceding just once in the last four games, Fulham’s defense is still the worst in the league. They have conceded 77 goals this season in total. Their home fans will want a win to cap off their season, as they prepare for life in the Championship.
Meanwhile, for Newcastle United, it has been another case of ‘Job well done.’ Rafa Benitez has dragged his team to safety yet again. The Magpies are in 14th place, and it is unlikely that they will finish any higher. Despite having limited resources at his disposal, Benitez once again impressed.
Newcastle have won twice in the last five league games. Last week they faced Liverpool, and the Reds needed to win to keep their title challenge alive. Newcastle gave them a good match and equalized twice to make it 2-2. Away from home, Newcastle have often been a conservative side. They have conceded 23 goals on the road, which is bettered by just Liverpool and Manchester City. But that resolute defending has come at a price. Their attack has faltered, and only the bottom three have scored few goals on the road than Newcastle.
Fulham have no major injury concerns, and Scott Parker has all his key players available for selection. Meanwhile, Newcastle will be without January recruit Miguel Almiron after he injured his hamstring against Southampton. Fabian Schar is also a doubt for Benitez after he was substituted in the game against Liverpool.
Fulham vs Newcastle Prediction
Fulham should dominate the possession in this game as they did in their last home game. But Newcastle will be solid defensively, and Fulham will find them hard to break down. The last day of the season always springs a few surprises, and this is a tough one to call. Both sides should score, and Fulham will be the slight favorites due to their recent form.
