Angers will host Metz at the Stade Jean-Bouin on Saturday in the Ligue 1.
Two games in, Metz have started the season quite well so far. They are unbeaten so far, and they are fourth in the table. Metz were promoted this season, and they would not have expected to be in such a lofty position. They traveled to face Strasbourg in their first game. Adrien Thomasson scored to give the home side the lead, but Habib Diallo answered to rescue a point for Metz. Strasbourg had more possession in the game, but Metz had more shots on target compared to their opponents.
In their next game, they hosted Monaco. Despite their tough predicament at the moment, Moncao have quite a talented team at their disposal. But Metz ran out 3-0 winners, which would have been a treat to watch for the home fans. Diallo scored twice in that game which took his tally for the season to three goals. Renaud Cohade added the third for Metz in what was a comfortable victory in the end. They had the upper hand throughout the game, which was partly because Monaco were reduced to ten men in the first half.
Metz finished second in Ligue 2 last season which handed them promotion to the top flight. Coach Frederic Antonetti has been at the club for just a little over a year, but he has worked miracles in that time. If the first two games of the new season are anything to go by Metz could do surprise many people this campaign.
Angers have been in the top flight for quite some time now, but they are beneath Metz as of now. They are 11th in the table after the first two games. Angers have been in the Ligue 1 since 2015, and they have been a mid-table side since then. Their best finish in that time came in 2016 when they finished in ninth place. That was the only time they finished in the top half in recent years.
Since then, the lowest they have sunk is 14th place. It’s safe to say that they have gone into the mid-table oblivion. In the two games they have played this season they have won one and lost the other. They hosted Bordeaux in their first game and won 3-1. Bordeaux took an early lead in the game, but goals from Jeff Reine-Adelaide, Mathias Pereira Lage, and Thomas Mangani gave them the three points.
The last four meetings between the two sides have been split in terms of results. Both sides have won two of those. Their latest meeting was in 2018 when Angers won 2-1.
Angers vs Metz Prediction
Despite being the promoted side, Metz will be favorites to beat Angers and pick up the three points. The game will be a tight one, and both sides should score. Metz had a very mean defense last season, and that should see them get the win at the expense of Angers.
