Everton vs Burnley Preview
Goodison Park will be host its last Premier League game of the season when Everton host Burnley on Friday.
A top-half finish is likely for Everton this season, but Marco Silva will have higher ambitions to round off his first season at the club. The Toffees are currently 9th in the Premier League table, but they could get into a Europa League spot. The team which finishes 7th this season will likely get that honor, and Wolves currently occupy that spot. Everton are four points behind them, and they will have some hope of overtaking them.
Silva’s position has not always been comfortable. A bad run to start 2019 put the pressure on him, but his side has responded admirably. They have stitched a great run of results in recent weeks. Everton have lost just once in the last six games, winning four of them. Those included wins over Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal, and all of them with clean sheets.
Last week they drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace, in a game which saw strong defensive performances from both sides. They will travel to face Tottenham after this, and this is an excellent opportunity to give their home fans the best send off. Everton have kept a clean sheet in each of their last four home games, and something similar is on the cards this Friday.
Burnley have achieved safety this season, and they are 15th in the table as it stands. They finished 7th last season, and such a high finish is not possible this time. Sean Dyche’s side started poorly, but they have recovered somewhat in this calendar year. They can get higher in the table, but the bottom half seems to be their limit this season.
The Clarets have nothing to play for this season, but they can affect other sides’ goals. This was clear when they hosted Manchester City on Sunday, as they aimed to halt the City’s title challenge. Dyche’s side were staunch defensively, but City scored through Sergio Aguero to clinch a narrow win. A similar performance is bound to cause Everton problems.
After winning three consecutive games, Burnley are now winless in their last two. Their last game is against Arsenal at Turf Moor, and Dyche would like to get that win before the season ends. Even though it has improved recently, Burnley’s defense is still one of the worst in the league. Everton will be hoping to take advantage, and Burnley would like to replicate Sunday’s performance.
Phil Bardsley could make a return for Burnley. Otherwise, Matt Lowton will continue in his absence. Andre Gomes is a significant absentee for Everton, as he will be suspended for the game. Yerry Mina is also likely to be out for the Toffees.
Everton vs Burnley Prediction
Everton will be favorites going into the game, and their recent home form reaffirms that. Another clean sheet for the home side is likely, as are all three points.
