Dominic Thiem vs Sam Querrey Preview and Prediction – Wimbledon 2019

Dominic Thiem will play Sam Querrey of the USA in the first round of Wimbledon on Tuesday.

Thiem is the fifth seed at the Championships, and he is one of the dark horses to win it. He reached the final in the last tournament he played, which was the French Open. Rafael Nadal claimed the victory in four sets to deny Thiem his first Grand Slam title. This year is the second consecutive one in which he had reached the French Open final. Now the Austrian will shift his sights to grass as he looks to capture that elusive Grand Slam title.

Statistically, Wimbledon has been the Grand Slam event in which he has been the poorest. Thiem has a 50% winning percentage at the Championships, which is worse than the other three majors. The fourth round is as far as he has gotten in his career, which he achieved in 2017. Last year he went out in the first round. Opponent Marcos Baghdatis took the first two sets in the match, and Thiem eventually retired due to an injury.

Now ranked fourth in the world, he will hope to better that performance. Thiem has the Barcelona Open and the Indian Wells titles to his name so far this year. He went out in the second round of the Australian Open in January. Thiem will turn 26 in September, and he will want to start capturing the majors soon. Wimbledon is a tough ask, but there’s no time quite like the present.

He will face Sam Querrey of the USA. Querrey’s peak came to a couple of years ago. His highest ever ranking came last year when he was ranked as high as 11th in the world. Querrey reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2017, which is his best performance at the tournament. He has not reached the semi-final at a Grand Slam on any other occasion yet.

He played the Eastbourne International as a warm-up tournament to Wimbledon, where he managed to reach the final. But Taylor Fritz beat him 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the title. Querrey is yet to win an ATP title in this year. His last ATP title came in 2017 when he won the Los Cabos Open by beating Thanasi Kokkinakis in the final.

Dominic Thiem vs Sam Querrey Prediction

Thiem and Querrey have met four times so far in their careers. Thiem has the better record, winning three of those meetings. The last match came on hard court in Vienna in 2018 when Thiem won 6-4, 6-4. Querrey’s only win came in 2017 in Mexico. The two are yet to meet on grass; all the past meetings have been on clay or hard court.

Thiem should be the clear favourite in this game based on the rankings, but he has not carried the same weight on the grass. On the other hand, Querrey has performed quite well at Wimbledon. He has also played a warmup tournament on the grass to boot. Thiem should get the win here, but the game will go to four sets at the very least.
