Djokovic continues his quest to be the “GOAT” at Indian Wells

Djokovic will continue his quest to be recognized as the “GOAT” (greatest of all time) at Indian Wells where he would be looking to tie Nadal for the most number of Masters 1000 titles(33 titles) and at the same time move ahead of Federer for the most number of Indian Wells titles(both have 6 at the moment).

Looking at the tournament lineup it looks highly likely that it’s ultimately going to be another dogfight in the final between Nadal and Djokovic with Djokovic again being the runaway favorite to win especially considering that Nadal has hardly had the ideal preparation or form after his recent loss to Nick Kyrgios. There could be other pretenders to the crown as well with Kyrgios and Tsitsipas also taking part but it would be a bit farfetched to look beyond Djokovic at this point of time.

Talking about Djokovic though Indian Wells would be acting as another stepping stone in his quest to become the undisputed “GOAT” of the sport. A claim that could at this moment of time be made by Both Federer and Nadal as well as both still have more grand slam titles than Djokovic at the moment (Federer has 20 while Nadal has 16 to Djokovic’s 15). But then the way Djokovic is racking up the numbers (he’s won the last three grand slams) he is a favorite to at least usurp (or equal) Nadal’s number of grand slams by the end of the year (if Nadal wins the French open then Djokovic would need to win both the Wimbledon and US Open to equal Nadal by the end of the year.

The most satisfying number and maybe the most legitimate comparison if one has to make among these legends then it has to be done in their head to heads. Djokovic leads Nadal 28-25 in their head to head battles while he leads Federer with a 25-22 win-loss record. The only knock that Djokovic faces when it comes to the debate for the Greatest of all time is the number of titles he has won and if he keeps going and one by one keeps on bettering the records of his contemporaries then even that argument would not be valid for long, will it happen or not is still up in the air but it sure does make an interesting storyline.
