One of the oldest rivalries in the NBA has been the one between Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks. Their rivalry goes way back to the 1949-50 Season when the two teams clashed for the first time. Ever since, the Atlanta Hawks and the Detroit Pistons have squared off in as many as 429 games in the NBA, with the Pistons winning 220 matches and the Hawks winning 209.
The teams have enjoyed a healthy rivalry and would be heading into the 2019-20 season with great gusto. When the Hawks and the Pistons clash on October 25 for the new season, the Pistons will be having a slight edge.
Both the teams had a rather forgettable last season with the Hawks failing to secure a playoff spot. However, in the 2018-19 Season, the Hawks and the Pistons clashed thrice with the Pistons winning twice while the Hawks securing victory in one game.
Detroit Pistons opened their season on Wednesday with a Central Division contest against the Pacers. The Pistons have some decent form coming into this game. They have won 3 and lost 2 of their last 5 matches. Last season, they made the playoffs for the first time since 2016, despite only finishing 41-41. Their glory didn’t last long as they were pummeled by the Bucks. This year, the Pistons will be hoping for a better start.
Blake Griffin has been the main star for the Pistons. Unfortunately, the 30-year-old will be out till early November due to a knee injury. Andre Drummond and Reggie Jackson would have to take a lot of responsibility in this game. The two are fine players but haven’t done justice to their talents last season. Derrick Rose, Markieff Morris, Luke Kennard, Bruce Brown, and Sekou Doumbouya are the new additions to the team that should make their base stronger.
The Atlanta Hawks, meanwhile, would have liked to be in a better position coming into this game. They have lost 4 of their last 5 games and are in desperate need of some good form. What’s more is that they had a miserable 2018-19 season where they couldn’t make the playoffs and lost 53 games while winning only 29.
This season, the Hawks would again be depending heavily on Trae Young who was one of the brightest spots for the team. John Collins too would be hoping to make a splash as he looks to be a future all-star material. Young Kevin Huerter had a good last season and is expected to do better this time and take the lead against the Pistons. Newly-acquired veterans Evan Turner and Allen Crabbe could have a significant difference for the Hawks.
The newly drafted rookies Deandre Hunter and Cam Reddish may make an impact too.
Prediction – Detroit Pistons v Atlanta Hawks:
Both Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks know each others’ strengths and weaknesses well by now. The two have always produced some great contests and one can expect another cracker of a game when the Pistons and Hawks clash on the 25th of October.
The Pistons have a solid team with a strong base and are riding on some good form. However, without Griffin on the offensive end, the team will struggle. In comparison, the Hawks are badly struggling with form and will be depending heavily on their two main players to bail them out. Their young stars along with veterans like Turner and Crabbe may turn out to be game-changers.
Hence, it is likely that the Detroit Pistons will be winners of this clash and will extend their lead over the Atlanta Hawks.
The combined points for this game should be in the range of 233-235.
