Two of the best sides on based on current form will face off when the Colorado Rapids take on New England at DSG Park on Thursday.
Colorado are unbeaten in their last six league games, winning four of them. They have picked 17 points out of the previous 21 available for them. In the 11 games before that, they had managed to pick up just two points. Colorado’s start to the season was terrible, but they have managed to recover somewhat. The playoffs are still far away, as they are five points below Houston who are in seventh.Embed from Getty Images
In their last game, Colorado claimed an impressive win. They faced LAFC who are the best side in the entire MLS. Colorado won 1-0 to inflict just the second defeat of the season on LAFC. Danny Wilson scored the solitary goal for Colorado in that game. LAFC had 66% possession, but they failed to penetrate Colorado’s solid back-line. That win continued their unbeaten run and must have given them tremendous confidence.
Colorado’s unbeaten run is remarkable, especially after their horrendous start to the season. One of the primary reason for that was their weak defense. Colorado have conceded 36 goals this season, which is the worst in the conference by far. Their attack has been decent, but the other side has leaked far too many goals. They have kept three clean sheets in the last month and a half, which is a massive improvement.
Opponents New England are in the other conference but a similar situation. They are also unbeaten in their last six league games. In that period, they have won thrice and drawn thrice. Those 12 points are a significant fraction of the 20 they have accumulated so far. New England are ninth in the east as it stands.Embed from Getty Images
They are three points below Toronto in seventh, who occupy the last playoff spot. About two months ago they had a minimal chance of making the playoffs, but their recent run has changed that. They are now a game behind the playoff spots. One of the primary reasons for their lower position has been their defense. New England have conceded 35 goals this season, which gives an average of nearly two per game.
Only bottom side Cincinnati have conceded more in the conference. New England’s last clean sheet came in May when they played out a goalless draw with Montreal. On the other hand, their attack has been weak. They have scored 20 goals in 18 games which totals to just over one each game. Improving both facets will be necessary if they want to make the playoffs.
Colorado Rapids vs New England Revolution Prediction
Both sides are in good form, and it will be a tough game. Colorado will be the slight favorites to take the three points. Neither defense is impressive, and we should see goals in this one. Both sides should score, and the total goals should be greater than 2.5 in the game.
