Russian Daniil Medvedev will take on David Goffin in the final of the Cincinnati Open.
Medvedev is in a roll in recent weeks, and this will be his third final in that period. He reached the final in Washington Open where Nick Kyrgios beat him in straight sets. In the coming week he Medvedev reached the final in Montreal. Again he lost in straight sets, this time to top seed Rafael Nadal. He will get a third crack at a title in Cincinnati when he faces Goffin.
The Russian has been impressive so far this tournament. In the first four rounds, he faced unseeded opponents and defeated each of them in straight sets. Kyle Edmund was conquered in the first round, and Benoit Paire was beaten in the second. Medvedev defeated Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round in straight sets. In the quarter-final, he saw of Andrey Rublev. However, his most impressive win came in the previous round.Embed from Getty Images
He faced top seed Novak Djokovic in the semi-final. Djokovic took the first set 6-3, and it looked as if he would take care of business. But Medvedev showed great spirit to crawl back and take the next two sets. He sealed the win with a brilliant passing shot which even Djokovic couldn’t help but applaud. Medvedev has won 42 games this year, which is the most by any male player. Rafael Nadal was tied with him on 41, but now he has eclipsed the Spaniard. One more win and he will have a trophy to cherish with that record.
He will come up against David Goffin in the final. He has enjoyed a relatively easy route to the final. Goffin beat Taylor Fritz in the first round, which was the only game in which he has dropped a set so far. Then he defeated Guido Pella in the next round in straight sets. Goffin took care of Adrian Mannarino in the round of 16. Yoshihito retired in the quarter-final which gave Goffin a free path to the semi-final.Embed from Getty Images
There he faced veteran Richard Gasquet who was attempting to make a comeback of sorts. Goffin beat him 6-3, 6-4 to progress to the final. Just like Medvedev, Goffin also played in Washington in Montreal. But in stark contrast, he lost in his first match at both the tournaments.Embed from Getty Images
Goffin and Medvedev have met just twice before in their careers. They have split the wins in those encounters. Both those meetings have come this year and in Grand Slams. Medvedev got the win in the Australian Open and Goffin exacted his revenge at Wimbledon.
Daniil Medvedev vs David Goffin Betting Tips
Both players are in form, but Medvedev will be the favorite to claim the title at Cincinnati. He has played brilliant tennis in the last few weeks, and that should carry him over the line against Goffin. The Belgian will make it tight, and the match will go to the third set. But the Russian should claim his first ATP Masters 1000 title.
