Cardiff vs Liverpool Preview
Cardiff will look to put a spanner in Liverpool’s title charge to aid their relegation fight when they host the Reds in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Bluebirds refuse to get relegated and still hold a slim chance of avoiding the drop this season. They are currently in 18th place with 31 points after 34 games and trail Brighton in 17th place by 2 points. However, the Seagulls do have a game in hand.
Neil Warnock’s men got a fantastic 2-0 win over Brighton in the previous game and will look to upset Liverpool’s title bid next. After facing the Reds, Cardiff play relegated Fulham, mid-table Crystal Palace and top four hopefuls Manchester United to finish the season.
Meanwhile, Brighton face Wolves, Tottenham, Newcastle, Arsenal and Manchester City, a much tougher run than the Bluebirds. Thus, the Welsh outfit are definitely in with a chance to escape relegation this season, and they will be naturally motivated against their visitors.
Coming to Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp’s men are coming into their own towards the business end of the competition, as they fight for the two big trophies – Premier League and Champions League. The Reds are currently top of the PL table with 85 points after 34 games, a two-point lead over Manchester City in second, who have a game in hand.
Further, the Citizens play on Saturday itself, and Liverpool could see themselves back in second place before a ball is kicked. The Reds are also into the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League, after dispatching their quarterfinal opponents comfortably with a 4-1 win in Portugal midweek, their eighth consecutive win in all competitions.
The Reds face Barcelona next and are hitting form at the right moment. Thus, they will look to dispatch Cardiff and continue to mount pressure on City. Pep Guardiola’s side are coming off the back of a dramatic loss to Tottenham in the UCL and play the same opponents on Saturday along with Manchester United on Wednesday.
Thus, Klopp will want his team to keep winning so that they can take advantage if City drop points in the final few games.
Neil Warnock will be without long-term absentees Sol Bamba, Callum Paterson and Matthew Connolly. Aron Gunnarsson is expected to be fit for the tie while Harry Arter looks like a doubt for Sunday.
Liverpool have a clean bill of health heading into the game. Dejan Lovren should be fit after missing out the midweek match due to illness. Joe Gomez played a few minutes midweeks and will be an extra option for Klopp. It remains to be seen when will Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain get game-time this season, if at all.
The Reds lead the head-to-head with five wins out of the last six meetings. Further, they are in red-hot form with five wins in their last 5 PL games. On the other hand, Cardiff have won 2 and lost 3 out of their previous five league games.
Cardiff vs Liverpool Betting Tips
Cardiff do not have a decent record at home, with only six wins in the PL this season. Further, the reverse fixture saw Liverpool win 4-1 while the previous meeting at this stadium ended in a 6-3 win for the Reds, including a Luis Suarez hat-trick.
Thus, it is hard to see beyond a Liverpool win even though Cardiff’s fight for survival as the Merseyside club will throw everything they have got to get 3 points.
