Eintracht Frankfurt will look to hold on to fourth place when they host Mainz at the Commerzbank Arena on Sunday in the Bundesliga.
Frankfurt’s European adventure came to a closure on Thursday. After the first leg ended in a 1-1 draw, the club traveled to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the second leg of the Europa League semi-final. Ruben Loftus-Cheek opened the scoring for Chelsea, but Luka Jovic equalized for Frankfurt. The game went to penalties, and Chelsea prevailed 4-3. Now they must focus their attention to the league. As it stands, they are in fourth place, which is good enough for Champions League football next season. But that position is far from secure. The likes of Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg, and Borussia Monchengladbach are hot on their tails. Leverkusen are level on points with Frankfurt, and only goal difference separates them. Frankfurt have an advantage of 5 there. But their recent form has been weak. Frankfurt are winless in their last four Bundesliga games.
Last week they faced Leverkusen, and it was an embarrassing day for Frankfurt. Leverkusen beat them 6-1, and all the goals came in the first half. Hutter put out a weakened sight, keeping the second leg against Chelsea in mind. Leverkusen took full advantage and hammered their opponents. Leverkusen had a whopping 82% possession in the game and Frankfurt had no answer. The likes of Luka Jovic and Mijat Gacinovic did not play in that game. Jovic has impressed this season, and he has scored a team-high 17 league goals.
Mainz, on the other hand, have nothing left to play for. They are in 12th spot, comfortably safe from any danger of relegation. Their recent form has been indicative of that. Mainz have won just one out of the last four games, losing two of them. Their record on the road is not excellent either, which will be encouraging news for Frankfurt. They have lost their last seven away games.
In those seven games, they have conceded 20 goals which gives an average of almost 3 per game. They have picked up the majority of their points at the Coface Arena this season. Away from home, they are a different side, and not in a good way. On the bright side, this is their last away game.Embed from Getty Images
Mainz have struggled for goals, and they have scored just 40 in the Bundesliga this season. Yoshinori Muto has been their top scorer this season with eight goals. On the other hand, Frankfurt have netted 59 in total.
Eintracht Frankfurt vs Mainz Prediction
Despite their midweek loss, Frankfurt will be the favorites for this game. They gave a good account of themselves at Stamford Bridge, and they will be fired up to bounce back. In league terms as well, they will have to get back to winning ways. The total goals in this one should be more than 2.5, and Frankfurt should roll to an easy win.
