Angers will host Bordeaux at the Stade Jean-Bouin in their first Ligue 1 match of the season.
Both these sides were separated by just a position in the table last season. Angers were 13th in the table with 46 points. They were comfortably safe from relegation in the end. Manager Stephane Moulin will hope for a better finish this season. Their form in the preseason has been encouraging. They opened their campaign with a win when they defeated Les Herbiers 3-1. Angers won their next two friendlies as well, beating US Orleans and Le Havre respectively.
They faced Feyenoord in the next game, and the match ended in a 2-2 draw. Their last two friendlies were against tough opposition. Borussia Monchengladbach were the first opponents, and the German side won 2-1. Angers’ last game was against Arsenal, and the two sides could not be separated in regulation time. Arsenal won 4-3 in the penalty shootout, but Angers’ performance was impressive. Farid El Melali got the goal for Angers in the game before Reiss Nelson equalised for Arsenal.
Flavien Tait left Angers in the summer when he signed for Stade Rennais. In his place Angers have signed Sada Thioub. The midfielder was signed from Nimes Olympique. Aside from Thioub, Mathias Pereira Lage was also signed. Striker Rachid Alioui came on a free transfer to bolster the attacking options. The squad is similar to what the club had last season, and Moulin will hope to achieve a better finish this time.
Bordeaux finished just a spot below Angers last season in the league. But their form in the preseason has not bee up to the mark. In the six preseason games they have played so far, Bordeaux have managed to win just one. That win came against Montpellier last month. The club has been in the news for signing French veteran Laurent Koscielny from Arsenal. The defender was signed for €5 million after he refused to travel to the preseason friendlies with the Gunners.
The way he left Arsenal was not in the best taste, but Bordeaux will be happy to get an experienced leader in their ranks. Aside from Koscielny, Bordeaux have also signed Korean striker Ui-jo Hwang. Their purchases this summer have been outweighed by the departures. Jules Kounde was snapped up by Sevilla for €25 million. It was a significant influx of cash for Bordeaux, and they will hope to use it astutely.
Angers have a better record in the recent meetings between these two sides. They won the last time these two sides met, which was in May. A solitary goal from Stephane Bahoken was enough to inflict defeat upon Bordeaux that day.
Angers vs Bordeaux Prediction
A similar result is likely again this time as well. Angers will go into the game as slight favorites to pick up the three points. Both sides should score in this game, and the total goals should be over 2.5 in the match. Bordeaux will make it close, but Angers should get the opening win of the season.
